This is a pioneering study of the impact of Christianization among the Chinese. Focusing primarily on the minority peoples of Yunnan province, it nonetheless fully mirrors the historical development of the Protestant mission in China. Drawing on many years of observation in the field and upon a comprehensive consultation of official documents relating to Christians on the mountain peaks, the study chronicles how the early foreign missionaries, thanks to their self-sacrifice and the examples they set of religious zeal, cemented the hitherto segregatory and leaderless tribes together, vigorously shaking the desolate mountain folk out of their age-long isolation. It was the trend of the time to identify Christianity as the desirable agent to promote socio-economic change in the undeveloped communities. This is a timely original contribution to the historical study of the Christian missionary enterprise and the pressing problem of freedom of worship that currently exists in China.

It was a cold yet breathtakingly beautiful day in January 1995 when Mike Couillard, a United States Air Force officer on assignment in Turkey, took his son Matthew skiing. As they rode the T-bar to the magnificent peaks of the 7,300-foot-high Kartalkaya Mountain, there was nothing to foretell the nightmare that was to come.It was the middle of the afternoon when they reached the top and, although it had started to snow, they still had time to ski. An experienced skier, Mike made note of his surroundings and kept the overhead line in sight as they glided downward. But suddenly the snow fell harder, visibility decreased, hidden rocks sent them plunging into the snow, and dense stands of pine trees forced them off the trail. Desperately, they looked for the lift line - or anything familiar - and saw nothing but white. They were lost.In the days that followed, Mike and his son desperately fought cold and hunger, while U.S. and Turkish teams were conducting a massive search and the story was making headlines throughout the world. But as hope for survival dwindled, their family and friends could do nothing but pray. Mike a Matt also asked for God's help, as Mike made the most difficult decision of his life - on that could mean death or salvation.

“The 2011 Leap of Faith: Mount Kilimanjaro expedition paired 14 climbers who had either multiple sclerosis or Parkinson's disease with 14 companion climbers. As with other expeditions, the summit loomed large in the hopes and dreams of the climbers. In the end, 21 of the 28 Leap of Faith team members would indeed make it to the top. But for all the men and woman on this trip, the climb had a higher purpose: to carry the light of hope and a message of strength to the highest reaches of both our planet and the human spirit. These are their stories—stories of fear and pain, of the courage to dig deep into that well of strength that lies within us all, and the willingness to try and try again, even in the face of insurmountable odds. Here are stories of shared joy and faith, stories of people who are more than climbers, on a climb of a peak that was more than a mountain, on an expedition that was more than a climbing journey. Here are the stories of a Leap of Faith.” – EXCERPT BY JEFF RENNICKE, 2011 LEAP OF FAITH:MOUNT KILIMANJARO EXPEDITION PHOTOGRAPHER “Without question, these stories will inspire you and leave you in awe of the power and beauty of the human spirit.” - Phil Bolsta, author of Through God's Eyes: Finding Peace and Purpose in a Troubled World "An exhilarating adventure on many levels worth reading."- Christopher Luzzio, MD, Neurologist "I have read all the exciting books by Krauker and Viesturs regarding climbing; More than a Mountain can be proudly shelved next to them.”- Dr. Jay L. #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Everybody tells you to live for a cause larger than yourself, but how exactly do you do it? The author of The Road to Character explores what it takes to lead a meaningful life in a self-centered world. “Deeply moving, frequently eloquent and extraordinarily incisive.”—The Washington Post Every so often, you meet people who radiate joy—who seem to know why they were put on this earth, who glow with a kind of inner light. Life, for these people, has often followed what we might think of as a two-mountain shape. They get out of school, they start a career, and they begin climbing the mountain they thought they were meant to climb. Their goals on this first mountain are the ones our culture endorses: to be a success, to make your mark, to experience personal happiness. But when they get to the top of that mountain, something happens. They look around and find the view . . . unsatisfying. They realize: This wasn’t my mountain after all. There’s another, bigger mountain out there that is actually my mountain. And so they embark on a new journey. On the second mountain, life moves from self-centered to other-centered. They want the things that are truly worth wanting, not the things other people tell them to want. They embrace a life of interdependence, not independence. They surrender to a life of commitment. In The Second Mountain, David Brooks explores the four commitments that define a life of meaning and purpose: to a spouse and family, to a vocation, to a philosophy or faith, and to a community. Our personal fulfillment depends on how well we choose and execute these commitments. Brooks looks at a range of people who have lived joyous, committed lives, and who have embraced the necessity and beauty of dependence. He gathers their wisdom on how to choose a partner, how to pick a vocation, how to live out a philosophy, and how we can begin to integrate our commitments into one overriding purpose. In short, this book is meant to help us all lead more meaningful lives. But it’s also a provocative social commentary. We live in a society, Brooks argues, that celebrates freedom, that tells us to be true to ourselves, at the expense of surrendering to a cause, rooting ourselves in a neighborhood, binding ourselves to others by social solidarity and love. We have taken individualism to the extreme—and in the process we have torn the social fabric in a thousand different ways. The path to repair is through making deeper commitments. In The Second Mountain, Brooks shows what can happen when we put commitment-making at the center of our lives.
