Excerpt from Paxton's Flower Garden, 1851-2, Vol. 2 As might be expected, they are perfectly hardy in this country, living without protection in low cold damp soils, provided they are placed among stones, so that no wet may lodge about them in winter. In such situations they rapidly cover the ground with a bright verdure formed of their entangled prostrate stems; and in the early autumn throw up an abundance of their gay rosy or rich brown red spikes.
