Both pattern recognition and signal processing are rapidly growing areas. Organized with emphasis on many inter-relations between the two areas, a NATO Advanced Study Institute on Pattern Recognition and Signal Processing was held June 25th - July 4, 1978 at the E.N.S.T. (Department of Electronics) in Paris, France. This volume is the Proceedings of the Institute. It contains what I believed to be a truly outstanding collection of papers which cover all major activities in both pattern recognition and signal processing. The papers are grouped by topics as follows: I. Syntactic Methods: paper numbers 1, 2. II. Statistical Methods: paper numbers 3, 4, 5, 6. III. Detection and Estimation: paper numbers 7, 8. IV. Image Processing, Modelling, and Analysis: paper numbers 9, 10, 11, 12. V. Speech Application: paper numbers 13, 14. VI. Radar Application: paper number 15. Seismic Application: paper number 16. VII. Biomedical Application: paper numbers 17, 18, 19. VIII. IX. Reconstruction From Projections: paper numbers 20, 21- X. Signal Modelling and Application: paper numbers 22, 23, 24. XI. NATO Pattern Recognition Research Study Group Report: paper number 25. It is my strong belief that there is a need for continuing interaction between pattern recognition and signal processing. The book will serve as a useful text and reference for such a need, and for both areas. Finally on behalf of all participants of the Institute, I would like to thank Drs. T. Kester and M. N. Czdas of NATO for their support.

Describing non-parametric and parametric theoretic classification and the training of discriminant functions, this second edition includes new and expanded sections on neural networks, Fisher's discriminant, wavelet transform, and the method of principal components. It contains discussions on dimensionality reduction and feature selection; novel computer system architectures; proven algorithms for solutions to common roadblocks in data processing; computing models including the Hamming net, the Kohonen self-organizing map, and the Hopfield net; detailed appendices with data sets illustrating key concepts in the text; and more.

Developments and Applications for ECG Signal Processing: Modeling, Segmentation, and Pattern Recognition covers reliable techniques for ECG signal processing and their potential to significantly increase the applicability of ECG use in diagnosis. This book details a wide range of challenges in the processes of acquisition, preprocessing, segmentation, mathematical modelling and pattern recognition in ECG signals, presenting practical and robust solutions based on digital signal processing techniques. Users will find this to be a comprehensive resource that contributes to research on the automatic analysis of ECG signals and extends resources relating to rapid and accurate diagnoses, particularly for long-term signals. Chapters cover classical and modern features surrounding f ECG signals, ECG signal acquisition systems, techniques for noise suppression for ECG signal processing, a delineation of the QRS complex, mathematical modelling of T- and P-waves, and the automatic classification of heartbeats. - Gives comprehensive coverage of ECG signal processing - Presents development and parametrization techniques for ECG signal acquisition systems - Analyzes and compares distortions caused by different digital filtering techniques for noise suppression applied over the ECG signal - Describes how to identify if a digitized ECG signal presents irreversible distortion through analysis of its frequency components prior to, and after, filtering - Considers how to enhance QRS complexes and differentiate these from artefacts, noise, and other characteristic waves under different scenarios

This edited volume contains a selection of refereed and revised papers originally presented at the International Symposium on Signal Processing and Intelligent Recognition Systems (SIRS-2014), March 13-15, 2014, Trivandrum, India. The program committee received 134 submissions from 11 countries. Each paper was peer reviewed by at least three or more independent referees of the program committee and the 52 papers were finally selected. The papers offer stimulating insights into Pattern Recognition, Machine Learning and Knowledge-Based Systems; Signal and Speech Processing; Image and Video Processing; Mobile Computing and Applications and Computer Vision. The book is directed to the researchers and scientists engaged in various field of signal processing and related areas.
