After a lengthy period during which scholars paid relatively little attention to the Pastoral Epistles, a spate of studies has suddenly appeared in print. However, except for a small number of commentaries, critical scholars have by and large neglected evangelical scholarship on these letters. To fill in this gap, this volume offers a collection of important essays written by evangelicals on 1 & 2 Timothy and Titus. The book aims to inform readers of the history of scholarship on these letters and examine thoroughly Paul’s theology in the Pastoral Epistles. Contributors include several scholars who have done previous advanced work on these letters: I. Howard Marshall (University of Aberdeen, Scotland; Recent Study in the Pastoral Epistles), Andreas Köstenberger (Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary[SEBTS]; Hermeneutical and Exegetical Challenges), Terry L. Wilder (B&H Publishing Group; Authorship), F. Alan Tomlinson (Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary [MBTS]; Purpose/Stewardship), Greg Couser (Cedarville University; Doctrine of God), Daniel L. Akin (SEBTS; Christology), Ray van Neste (Union University; Cohesion and Structure of the PE), B. Paul Wolfe (Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary; Use of Scripture), Ben Merkle (SEBTS; Ecclesiology), George Wieland (Carey Baptist College, New Zealand; Soteriology), Thor Madsen (MBTS; Ethics), and Chiao Ek Ho (East Asia School of Theology, Singapore; Missiology).

In Pastoral Care in the Classical Tradition, Andrew Purves argued that pastoral care and theology has long ignored Scripture and Christian doctrine, and pastoral practice has become secularized in both method and goal, the fiefdom of psychology and the social sciences. He builds further on this idea here, presenting a christological basis for ministry and pastoral theology.

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1885 edition. Excerpt: ... ing with it divine powers and fruits, and producing a relation to God in Christ and to His eternal kingdom, which manifests itself in a life of obedience and blessedness. If preaching is to accomplish this object, it must give the words which Christ gave to His disciples as God's word; God's word must be taught in the sense in which it was taught by Jesus Christ and His apostles; that is, it must be taught in exact accordance with Scripture. For this reason it is not every sermon that is God's word. Very vague ideas prevail on this point. This subject is minutely discussed by Burk, Collections for Pastoral Theology, the older edition, pp. 748--752 (edition by Oehler, p. 459); and by Sailer in his concise Admonitions to Young Preachers, p. 11: "A Christian preacher will, like a steward in the house of God, allow no one to lay any other foundation in the Church of God than that which is the true foundation, apart from which there is no salvation. A Christian sower will scatter divine seed according to the teaching and the example of Jesus and His apostles. He who teaches God's word, will teach regarding God and Jesus and the Holy Ghost what Christ Himself teaches: regarding man, his fall and restoration, his destiny, and so forth, he will likewise teach what Jesus taught. Let him who would teach God's word teach what was taught by Christ's apostles in Christ's spirit." In order to determine more exactly the fundamental idea of the pastoral office as found in Scripture, we add--2. Features of the pastoral life of the apostles, with special reference to doctrine, government, and service. First of all, for a right apprehension of the superintendent's position and his work as a leader, we find 1 Pet. v. 1-3 eminently instructive. From this...

What is the ultimate purpose of pastoral ministry? What emphases and priorities should take precedence? In the day-to-day emphasis on various pastoral roles and pragmatic concerns, what can sometimes get lost is the theological foundation for understanding pastoral ministry. James Thompson is a New Testament scholar with a concern for relating biblical studies to practical ministry. Here he does a careful study of several of Paul's epistles in order to see what Paul's vision and purpose were for his own ministry. He finds that Paul's aim was an ethical transformation of the communities (not just individuals) with which he worked, so that they would live lives worthy of the gospel until Christ's return. Using this as a framework, Thompson offers suggestions for practical application to contemporary ministry.
