The starting point for the book is the following anomoly: If Jesus lived as has been supposed at the beginning of the 1st century AD, the only NT documents written by a near contemporary, the Epistles of St Paul, make no mention of him as an historical figure, neither do they record any of his sayings, but rather they talk of him as a vision or mystical experience of the risen Christ. Further, the same is true of the earliest Christian non-NT texts, such as the Epistles of St Clement, roughly contemporary with Paul. Furthermore, contemporary records of the region from non-Christian sources, such as those by the Jewish historian Josephus, fail to mention Jesus at all where we would expect them to; the mentions that there are have recently been shown to be later interpolations by medieval Christian apologists - the gospel accounts of Jesus and his millieu are inaccurate in all major respects e. g. the relative dates of Herod and Pilate, if contemporary Roman and Jewish historians, who had no theological axe to grind, are taken as measure. By comparative textual studies, the author shows that the gospel accounts of Jesus' life and sayings were written approximately 100 years after Jesus is supposed to have lived, and so 100 years later than alleged contemporaries such as Paul, Clement, Josephus etc.

Profound reflections on the cross that help you to meditate on and marvel at the sacrificial love of Jesus. This book can be used as a devotional, especially during Lent and Easter. These profound reflections on the cross from David Mathis, author of The Christmas We Didn’t Expect, will help you to meditate on and marvel at Jesus’ life, sacrificial death, and spectacular resurrection-enabling you to treasure anew who Jesus is and what he has done. Many of us are so familiar with the Easter story that it becomes easy to miss subtle details and difficult to really enjoy its meaning. This book will help you to pause and marvel at Jesus, whose now-glorified wounds are a sign of his unfailing love and the decisive victory that he has won: “He was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.” (Isaiah 53:5) This book can be used as a devotional. The chapters on Holy Week make it especially helpful during the Lent season and at Easter.

Excerpt from 100 Years The bible. It is the inspired Word of God. For in the Scriptures holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Spirit. The Bible is our text book for Christian faith and life. In it we find the truth about God, His plan of salvation, and the Christian way of life. The thought of the accompanying great hymn is one example of the influence of God's Word in man's life. The church becomes the bearer of its wisdom, its truth and its light, that these may be central in our lives. Sin. Although God has created man in His own spiritual likeness, He endowed him with freedom of will and choice. But man has not lived up to God's will and way. All have sinned and come short of the Glory of God. This sin is the source of our world's sorrow. It causes trouble among men, and by reason of it each human soul, in his natural state, is lost. To help us better understand the Sunday and weekday Gospel readings, David Knight has collected his reflections for the lectionary year B in this handy book. Each brief reflection is based on the Gospel of the particular Sunday or weekday. For each weekday, the author has chosen one line from the day's Gospel and offered one question to stimulate reflection. To help us integrate the Gospel into our daily lives, Knight provides in a section called "Living This Week's Gospel" five suggested responses we can make to the Sunday Gospel each week. He bases his suggestions on five words which summarize our identity as Christians: Christian, disciple, prophet, priest and king. Finally, Knight adds a prayer that we can say each day all week, asking for the grace to live by the values proposed in the Sunday reflection.
