The Fig-marigold of the Cape, Mesembriantemum acinaciforme, is perfectly naturalised, and takes the place of grass on the embankments of the LisbonCascaes railway line. Of Some Indigenous Plants AS A NEGATIVE CHARACTER Or TEE CLIMATE 1.--Due to climate. a) On the northern side, the Serra of Cintra acts as a barrier, to the extension southwards of the Bastard Plane-tree, or the Sycamore, Acer pseudo-plat anus, and of the Lusitanian Prune, Prunus Lusitanica. The Birch, Betula alba, the Holly, Ilex aquifolium, and the Box, Buxus sempervirens, have their polar limit at Coimbra and Bussaco. b) On the southern side, the Serra of Arrabida forms a barrier to the extension northwards of the Dwarf Palm, Chamcerops humilis, and of the Carob, the Locust-bean or St. John's Bread-tree, Ceratonia siliqua. The dwarf palm, known in Portuguese as the Broom Palm, for brooms, baskets and mats are made of it in Algarve, is the only European representative of the mighty and majestic cocoanut, the royal Figi and other palms of the tropics, and attains its highest latitude in Portugal at the Serra of Arrabida. The last indigenous specimen of this plant, existing in the South of France, died, to the great regret of the French botanists, in April, 1908. 2 1851. It is to be hoped that this very interesting palm will not succumb, at Arrabida, to the indiscreet attention of too zealous herborizers or to the predatory habits of senseless...
