Excerpt from Nollekens and His Times This curious and entertaining work, which gives so unique a picture of the household life of a popular artist at the end of the eighteenth century, was brought out in two octavo volumes by Colburn in 1828. It contained, as frontispiece, a fine lithograph of Nollekens', engraved by William Bond from a drawing by John Jackson, R.A. A second edition, revised, appeared in 1829, and this has been taken as the text for the present reprint. In this edition Smith omitted some of his desultory anecdotes, which had no bearing whatever upon the life of his hero, and, with one exception, it has not been thought desirable to put them back again. The two editions have, however, been carefully collated. In reprinting the 'Life of Nollekens' two changes have been made, an account of which must here be given. In order to fill out the second of his volumes, J. T. Smith appended 'Memoirs of several Contemporary Artists, from the time of Roubiliac, Hogarth and Reynolds, to that of Fuseli, Flaxman and Blake.'
