JOHN MERWIN (1946-2013) embraced fishing, looking across a stream or out a window, thinking, musing and writing. Neighbors and acquaintances, mostly unaware of John's legendary angling prominence, looked forward to his columns in Stratton Magazine, 1989 to 2006. Laced with droll countryman wit, dozens expound on rural Vermont life. More or less. As his editor, Marsha Norman, once teased,"He said all his stories are true stories. Mostly." At deadline with manuscript absent-Marsha occasionally ran a reprint and captioned, "John Merwin is on vacation." Not so. Instead, in those years he was fishing editor at Field & Stream magazine--too much to do and too little time. But even then, as F&S colleague and friend Dave Hurteau remembers in the foreword, "No Fishing" (i.e., musing) was just as important to John as fishing. While not fishing John had made time to write these Stratton columns. Missing him and his stories, readers and anglers asked for this collection, and kept asking.... So here it is: No Fishing.

For fans of Ryan T. Higgins and Jory John comes a humorous and "splashy" story from a former Disney animator, about a jellyfish with an identity crisis who learns how to be himself with a little help from friends. Edgar is a jellyfish, but he doesn't look, act, or feel very much like a "fish." With a little help though from some friendly starfish, Edgar realizes that labels aren't important, and he should celebrate what makes him unique!

Fishing for elephants explains the creative processes of art and life with a conversational, humorous, and informative voice. While it is geared towards artists, it is not a how to paint something to look like something book. It's a how to think for yourself, move forward, get out of your comfort zone, get out of your own way, define your voice, refine your voice, focus on those characteristics of creating that are authentic to you and try new directions kind of book for all levels. Designed to help you discover new artistic directions and open the neural pathways to creative problem-solving, Fishing for elephants is presented in two halves. The first contains everything you need to know about the process of creativity; what keeps you from it, what it is, how to use it and how to get unstuck. It's flipping all your light switches on kind of stuff. The truth is anyone can be more creative with just a few easy steps. The second half, VoiceFinding, is the first half put into action for artists who want to get to their core authentic self, or just want to push out a little. There are more than 150 examples and unconventional exercises designed to break this process into bite-sized chunks so your genius skill-set will expand exponentially. It's year-long class in a workbook format, with areas to answer creative challenges, set goals, write artist's statements, sketch out ideas, apply processes like free association, mind maps, reportage, mixed-media, and continuous line drawing in new and thought-challenging ways. Written by nationally recognized, award-winning artist and creative coach, Larry Moore.

The bulk of fly-fishing literature is centered on matching the hatch, when in reality, on most waters, most of the time, there is no hatch to match. This eye-opening book provides a wide range of strategies for fishing resourcefully between the hatches. These include subtle techniques of presentation, such as micro-nymphing for inactive trout; aggressive strategies such as long-line nymphing with precision for active trout; using prospecting dry flies and streamers effectively; and a wealth of practical advice on reading the water. It includes chapters on seasonal movements of trout, temperature-induced feeding binges, beating the heat, dealing with dirty water, and targeting big, carnivorous trout. It will expand your repertoire and make you a more successful fly fisher.
