The Emancipation Proclamation, widely remembered as the heroic act that ended slavery, in fact freed slaves only in states in the rebellious South. True emancipation was accomplished over a longer period and by several means. Essays by eight distinguished contributors consider aspects of the president's decision making, as well as events beyond Washington, offering new insights on the consequences and legacies of freedom, the engagement of black Americans in their liberation, and the issues of citizenship and rights that were not decided by Lincoln's document. The essays portray emancipation as a product of many hands, best understood by considering all the actors, the place, and the time. The contributors are William A. Blair, Richard Carwardine, Paul Finkelman, Louis Gerteis, Steven Hahn, Stephanie McCurry, Mark E. Neely Jr., Michael Vorenberg, and Karen Fisher Younger.

New Proclamation Commentary on Feasts, Holy Days, and Other Celebrations continues the tradition of excellent biblical commentary that users of the seasonal New Proclamation volumes have come to expect. This volume offers essential historical background about each of thirty-five so-called lesser feasts and places each day into the context of the church year. Quotes related to the festival day from prayers, liturgies, and other sources have been included to help enliven the sermon and enhance worship, along with other guidance for preaching. Commentary and recommended texts for ten national days and nonliturgical celebrations are also included.

There is often an unfortunate division between the technical work of biblical scholars and the practical work of preachers who construct sermons each week. These two fields of study, which ought to be mutually informed and supportive, are more often practically divided by divergent methods, interests, and goals. Narrative Reading, Narrative Preaching aims to bridge that divide. Using narrative as an organizing theme, the contributors work through the New Testament offering examples of how interpretation can rightly inform proclamation. Three pairs of chapters feature an exemplary reading by a New Testament scholar followed by a sermon informed by that reading. Introductory and concluding chapters provide guidance for application of the model. Pastors and seminarians will find here a uniquely practical work that will help them with both the reading and preaching of Scripture.

Luke is here presented as contributing to New Testament Christology through his treatment of Old Testament Christological texts. This redaction-critical study argues that Luke's use of the Old Testament is not so much a 'proof from prophecy' as a 'proclamation' that draws both upon prophecies and upon patterns. This proclamation as it is developed in Luke-Acts serves to turn the reader's attention from seeing Jesus as Messiah to seeing him eventually as Lord.

'This book drags systematic theology out of the study, sticks it into the pulpit, onto the altar, and under the waters of baptism so that it proclaims the gospel. It sets limits within which discussions of ministry and ecumenism must occur, if we are to remain proclaimers of the gospel. Forde's work ought to be the centerpiece for years to come, simply because-in his inimitably impatient way-he has it right.' James M. Kittelson, Professor of History, University of Ohio

"Exult, let them exult, the hosts of heaven, exult, let Angel ministers of God exult, let the trumpet of salvation sound aloud our mighty King's triumph! Be glad, let earth be glad, as glory floods her, ablaze with light from her eternal King, let al corners of the earth be glad, knowing an end to gloom and darkness."" "The Easter Proclamation," or "Exsultet," is the triumphant song of praise that proclaims "Christ is Risen!" during the Easter Vigil in the Roman Rite. Acclaimed iconographer Charles Rohrbacher has illustrated a one-of-a-kind ritual book: "The Easter Proclamation" ("Exsultet"). This CD presents the vivid, scripturally grounded images of his unique work for projection in the sanctuary and use in prayer. The icons of "The Easter Proclamation" draw on the vivid and poetic texts of the ancient hymn. They depict Holy Mother Church, Moses leading the Israelites through the Red Sea, the expulsion of Adam and Eve from the Garden, Christ the Morning Star and other images from the great story of salvation as proclaimed in this sacred moment. Charles Rohrbacher reverently depicts each of these scenes using classical iconography techniques. Each unique picture draws on the long tradition of Christian icon writing.
