In recent years the cultural climate of America has shifted dramatically away from a biblical worldview. For the committed Christian, this turn of events poses many problems. However, Believers do not have to shrink back in fear or run from the battle. There is also a counterculture of passionate Christians who are not willing to sit by idly as our history is rewritten, our legacies destroyed, and our future stolen. Instead, this counterculture aims to take back our nation and ultimately reform and restore America. In a thought-provoking exploration shared to encourage the remnant and call others out of darkness into God’s light, Catherine Butte challenges Christians and nonbelievers alike to rise from the ordinary and move into the extraordinary in order to experience more of the epic life God has planned for each of us. Through her guidance and insights, readers will: • Experience the liberating truths and freedom that comes with a biblically-based discourse on matters that are attempting to divide our nation and the Body of Christ; • Be armed with the truth of our nation’s biblical roots and its righteous foundation; • Be encouraged and inspired by the wonder of the supernatural and miraculous in the life of the Believer; and • Receive God’s unconditional love, grace, and mercy. Counterculture is an uplifting presentation that offers the truths of God’s Word to encourage Christians and nonbelievers to join a passionate movement to see America gloriously reformed and restored.

This is the first book to focus on Latin epic verse saints' lives in their medieval historical contexts. Anna Taylor examines how these works promoted bonds of friendship and expressed rivalries among writers, monasteries, saints, earthly patrons, teachers and students in Western Europe in the central Middle Ages. Using philological, codicological and microhistorical approaches, Professor Taylor reveals new insights that will reshape our understanding of monasticism, patronage and education. These texts give historians an unprecedented glimpse inside the early medieval classroom, provide a nuanced view of the complicated synthesis of the Christian and Classical heritages, and show the cultural importance and varied functions of poetic composition in the ninth, tenth and eleventh centuries.

“From her head down to her gnarly (no longer!) toes, Kathie Lee is pure dame. And she’s served up a cocktail of wit and wisdom with a decidedly salty rim!”—Meredith Vieira Just When I Thought I’d Dropped My Last Egg is Kathie Lee Gifford’s triumphant laugh-out-loud celebration of forging ahead with gusto, even long after we’re old enough to know better. Age, after all, isn’t a number, it’s a state of mind, and being fertile isn’t just about having babies, it’s about being passionate and creative. Writing with the candor of a friend who knows where the bodies are buried, Kathie Lee reveals the truth every woman of a certain age knows but won’t admit: that we love our kids every second of every day but are counting the minutes till they’re ready to go off to college, that even though gravity is a constant force, not all parts of our bodies droop at the same rate, and that life and show business share one simple rule: “Don’t sit by the phone and wait for a man or a job.” Full of warmth, humor, and down-to-earth wisdom, this wonderful book is a delectable read for grown-ups of all ages. Praise for Just When I Thought I’d Dropped My Last Egg “I’ve been through a couple of calamities with Kathie Lee and nobody handles them better. You could blow her up, cook her and hang her out to dry and she will still survive and have some laughs doing it.”—Regis Philbin “Kathie Lee has always entertained me with her humor, wry wit, and penchant for pinpointing all of our very human foibles with great accuracy and hilarity. Now she does it again. This charming memoir filled with amusing anecdotes about herself and her family, friends, and colleagues brought a smile to my face but also touched me. Her insight is as remarkable as she is.”—Barbara Taylor Bradford “Gifford dishes about everything.”—The Tampa Tribune “Fans will be delighted . . . by the book’s mix of earnest life lessons and self-conscious kookiness.”—Publishers Weekly “Outrageously funny . . . [Gifford’s] quirky sense of humor shines through.”—Wichita Falls Times Record News
An American Martyr in Persia: The Epic Life and Tragic Death of Howard Baskerville

In this erudite and piercing biography, best-selling author Reza Aslan proves that one person’s actions can have revolutionary consequences that reverberate the world over. Little known in America but venerated as a martyr in Iran, Howard Baskerville was a twenty-two-year-old Christian missionary from South Dakota who traveled to Persia (modern-day Iran) in 1907 for a two-year stint teaching English and preaching the gospel. He arrived in the midst of a democratic revolution—the first of its kind in the Middle East—led by a group of brilliant young firebrands committed to transforming their country into a fully self-determining, constitutional monarchy, one with free elections and an independent parliament. The Persian students Baskerville educated in English in turn educated him about their struggle for democracy, ultimately inspiring him to leave his teaching post and join them in their fight against a tyrannical shah and his British and Russian backers. “The only difference between me and these people is the place of my birth," Baskerville declared, “and that is not a big difference.” In 1909, Baskerville was killed in battle alongside his students, but his martyrdom spurred on the revolutionaries who succeeded in removing the shah from power, signing a new constitution, and rebuilding parliament in Tehran. To this day, Baskerville’s tomb in the city of Tabriz remains a place of pilgrimage. Every year, thousands of Iranians visit his grave to honor the American who gave his life for Iran. In this rip-roaring tale of his life and death, Aslan gives us a powerful parable about the universal ideals of democracy—and to what degree Americans are willing to support those ideals in a foreign land. Woven throughout is an essential history of the nation we now know as Iran—frequently demonized and misunderstood in the West. Indeed, Baskerville’s life and death represent a “road not taken” in Iran. Baskerville’s story, like his life, is at the center of a whirlwind in which Americans must ask themselves: How seriously do we take our ideals of constitutional democracy and whose freedom do we support?
