Excerpt from Municipal Engineering and Sanitation This volume is intended for that large and rapidly growing class of persons who, either as officials or as citizens, are striving to improve municipal conditions. It is designed to be a review of the whole field of municipal engineering and sanitation, rather than an exhaustive study of one or a few branches of the subject. The most vital points, however, under each class of activities and interests have been dwelt upon, the underlying principles stated, and, in many instances, details from actual practice given. While it is not to be expected that engineers and sanitarians will find in the book much relating to their specialties that is new to them, it is believed that the number and variety of subjects treated, and the comparative newness of some of the topics, will make the book helpful even to professional men. A few standard treatises have been mentioned in the text or in footnotes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from State Sanitation, 1917, Vol. 1 A second object of this book is to bring to life some of these older writings, the ideas in which will often be found to be strikingly modern, by reprinting selected portions of them; and to make the later issues more useful by indexing the scientific reports and special articles. It is believed that the index to the reports of the Lawrence Experiment Station in particular, will prove useful to students, engineers, and sanitarians. The index of outbreaks of disease, cross indexed according to cities and towns, ought to be useful to the physicians of the state. Excerpt from The Sanitation of Cities But it is only in recent years that serious efforts have been made toward correlating these activi ties, thereby obtaining not only a more economi cal plan in the outlay of public funds, but also a much higher efficiency. It is self-evident that street layouts should be related not only to the needs of traffic and the marketing of real property, but also with regard to the most efficient and economical design for the public utilities, such as water supply, surface drainage and sewers. It is no less evident that the needs of water purification and methods to be em ployed should be considered in relation to sewage treatment and disposal - and that garbage dis posal and sewage disposal should be considered together. There are many other questions that are related and should be given consideration at the same time, even if not intended to be pro vided for together, so that when provided for they may fit in as harmonious parts of a well planned municipal unit; and the construction of the parts may be carried on progressively, al ways aiming at a future result by practical means, within the reasonable capacity and resources of the city. Excerpt from The Past and Present Condition of Public Hygiene and State Medicine in the United States It is the exercise of this function, the prevention of disease, which forms the first and most important duty of sanitary authorities. In a monograph of this character the various topics per taining to public hygiene must necessarily be treated in an extremely concise, condensed manner, and must also be shorn of extended details. It is for this reason, therefore, that a few tables of statistics have been introduced in order that the facts relating to the subjects may be given in the least possible space.
