In the field of business, finance and economy, the English language has taken first place, even between people, institutions and countries whose respective native tongues are foreign to the English language. Spanish has become a very necessary language in different countries, thus, the combination of both languages provides an instrument of communication that is indispensable and unavoidable.This dictionary takes into account the frequent difficulties which economists, financiers, interpreters and others may have, in fully understanding the scope of a given field, expressions or even words, that in the highly specialised jargon of economics have acquired very concise meanings. Intensive research into definitions in the extremely vast field of economics, finance and business, has produced a dictionary well designed to fulfill the needs of users of a two-language dictionary. Proper and very factual explanations and definitions are given for each word or group of words, thus making absolutely clear to professionals which term to use.

This quadrilingual economics dictionary is the result of many years of work. Professor Frits J. de J ong gathered material for this book since the very beginning of his professional career in the final years of the forties. Unfortunately, the author himself was not able to see the final result of his labours in book form. A mere few weeks after the completion of the manuscript, in November 1976, Professor De Jong passed away. As Hartog and Hennipman wrote in their memorials, Frits de Jong always devoted much attention to the development of concepts and terminology. Throughout his career, he exhibited great determination and perseverance in trying to achieve a clear and consistent terminology, and its subsequent use, in the science of economics. !' 2 That his efforts were mainly aimed at his native language was due to the fact that a language such as Dutch, which is only practiced in a small geographic area, faces the danger of a large-scale introduction of foreign words, specifically English/American, German and French words in this case. He always strongly resisted such a debasement of the Dutch language and sought instead to construct appropriate Dutch words for the existing English, German and French ones. An early example can be found in an article published in De Economist of 1950, entitled "De economische terminologie in het Nederlands" (The Terminology of Economics in Dutch).

The idea for this dictionary on economic terms originated with the reference books that we have been bringing out. The leading concern was for average students and inquisitive readers who needed to be helped into grasping the meaning of the terms used in books on economics.The dictionary covers almost all the terms that form a part and parcel of economics in simple and easily comprehensible language. In order to enhance the readers' knowledge and bring about more relevance, many examples and graphs have been used along with the definitions of the terms. The dictionary has been arranged alphabetically A-Z, including new terms that have come into regular use. A number of entries contain cross reference except where the word or phrase is self contained and complete in itself. To simplify understanding, graphs accompany the entry wherever considered necessary.'Brief Biographies' of distinguished economists have also been included. Those mentioned have made important contribution to a particular growth model. The edition also contains popular acronyms. Significant data about economic performance of major sectors of economy and bibliographic references by way of appendices have been included; a list showing the Nobel Prize winners in economics from 1969 to 2012 along with their contribution finds place in the appendices section.
