Written though it was with heart's blood, it failed to convince those who would have revelled in an avowed Confession. It treated largely, as was inevitable, of persons with whom Mrs. Linton had been brought into contact, and in an unfortunate moment she conceived the idea of reversing her own sex and that of many of her characters for their better disguise. To those who could read between the lines the effect was somewhat bizarre, while to those not in the secret the story was in parts incomprehensible. Thus the book enjoyed a lesser vogue than any of her three-volume novels, and never reached a second edition. And yet it is a human document of real importance and engrossing interest.
