This book describes that not only did God create all men and women equally, he created all creatures equally. Even we are spiritually linked to all of God's creations, and carry each other's traits in varying measures. Since animals, especially mammals are the closest physiologically to humans, their influence is the most pronounced after that of humans themselves. When you go through the contents of the book, you will recognise the traits possessed by many of your kin, relatives and friends and possibly yourself. The purpose behind the book is to enlighten and entertain, while at the same time make us sensitive to the fact that life is not exclusive to human beings, and that we possibly share a lot in common with life forms we consider inferior.

Motivation refers to the psychological processes that drive and direct our behavior towards achieving certain goals or fulfilling specific needs. It is the force that energizes, sustains, and guides our actions, thoughts, and emotions. Motivation can arise from various sources, including internal factors like personal values, interests, and aspirations, as well as external factors like rewards, recognition, and social pressure. It plays a crucial role in influencing our decisions, shaping our attitudes, and determining the level of effort we invest in tasks. Different theories of motivation, such as Maslow's hierarchy of needs, expectancy theory, and self-determination theory, provide insights into understanding the complexities of human motivation and how it impacts behavior.

To scientists engaged in research on the cellular mechanisms in the mammalian brain, concepts of "motivation" seem to be a logical neces sity, even if they are not fashionable. Immersed in the detailed, time consuming research required to deal with mammalian nerve cells, we usually pay scant attention to the more global brain -behavior questions that have arisen from decades of biological and psychological studies. We felt it was time to confront these issues-namely, how far has neuro biological investigation come in uncovering mechanisms by which moti vational signals influence behavior? At Rockefeller University, we have recently held a course on this subject. We restricted our treatment to those motivational systems most tractable to physiological approaches, and invited scientists skilled in both behavioral issues and physiological techniques to participate. This volume results from that course. The deans and administration at Rockefeller University provided much help in planning the course, and the staff of Springer-Verlag assisted in planning the book. Of the many conceptual distinctions present in psychology today, the approach-avoidance distinction stands out as one of, if not the, most fundamental and basic. The distinction between approach and avoidance motivation has a venerable history, not only within but beyond scientific psychology, and the deep utility of this distinction is clearly evident across theoretical traditions, disciplines, and content areas. This volume is designed to illustrate and highlight the central importance of this distinction, to serve as a one-stop resource for scholars working in this area, and to facilitate integration among researchers and theorists with an explicit or implicit interest in approach and avoidance motivation. The main body of this volume is organized according to seven broad sections that represent core areas of interest in the study of approach and avoidance motivation, including neurophysiology and neurobiology, and evaluative processes. The most important aspect of evolution, from a philosophical viewpoint, is the rise of complex, advanced creatures from simple, primitive ones. This "vertical" dimension of evolution has been downplayed in both the specialist and popular literature on evolution, in large part because it was in the past associated with unsavory political views. The avoidance of evolution's vertical dimension has, however, left evolutionary biology open to the perception, from outside, that it deals merely with the diversification of rather similar creatures, all at the same level of "advancedness" from a common ancestor—for example, the classic case studies of finches with different beaks or moths of different colors. The latest incarnation of creationism, dubbed intelligent design (or ID), has taken advantage of this situation. It portrays an evolutionary process that is constantly guided—especially in its upward direction—by the hand of an unseen Creator, who is able to ensure that it ends up producing humans. Creatures of Accident attacks the antiscience ID worldview, mainly by building a persuasive picture of how "unaided" evolution produces advanced creatures from simple ones by an essentially accidental process. Having built this picture, in the final chapter the book reflects on its religious implications.
