In the era of the Internet and Oprah, in which formerly taboo information is readily available or freely confided, secrecy and privacy have in many ways given way to an onslaught of confession. Yet for those who are HIV positive, decisions about disclosure of their diagnosis force them to confront intimate, fundamental, and rarely discussed questions about truth, lies, sex, and trust. Drawing from interviews with over seventy gay men and women, intravenous drug users, sex workers, bisexual men, and heterosexual men and women, the authors provide a detailed portrait of moral, social, and psychological decision making. The interviews convey the complex emotions of love, lust, longing, hope, despair, and fear that shape individual dilemmas about whether to disclose to, deceive, or trust others concerning this disease. Some of those interviewed revealed their diagnosis widely; others told no one. Some struggled and ultimately told their partners; others spoke in codes or half-truths. One woman discovered her husband's diagnosis in a diary; when confronted, he denied it. Each year in the United States, 40,000 new cases of HIV arise, yet approximately one-third of the 900,000 Americans who are infected do not know it. As treatments have improved, unsafe sexual behavior has increased and efforts at prevention have stalled. Many of those infected continue to fear and experience rejection and discrimination. Addressing broad debates about the nature of secrecy, morality, and silence, this book explores public policy questions in the light of the nuanced, private decisions that are shaping the course of an epidemic and have broader indications for all.

A chronicle of Vienna's Golden Age and the influence of Sigmund Freud on the modern world by a clinical psychologist whose mystery novels form the basis of PBS's Vienna Blood series. Some cities are like stars. When the conditions are right, they ignite, and burn with such fierce intensity that they outshine every other city on the planet. Vienna was one such city and, at the beginning of the twentieth century, was the birthplace of the modern mind and the way we live today. Long coffee menus and celebrity interviews are Viennese inventions. ‘Modern’ buildings were appearing in Vienna long before they started appearing in New York and the idea of practical modern home design originated in the work of Viennese architect Adolf Loos. The place, however, where one finds the most indelible and profound impression of Viennese influence is inside your head. How we think about ourselves has been largely determined by Vienna’s most celebrated resident, Sigmund Freud. In Mortal Secrets, Frank Tallis brilliantly illuminates Sigmund Freud and his times, taking readers into the mind of one of the most influential thinkers of the twentieth century, chronicling the evolution of psychoanalysis and opening up Freud’s life to embrace the Vienna he lived in and the lives of the people he mingled with from Gustav Klimt to Arnold Schönberg, Egon Schiele to Gustav Mahler. Mortal Secrets is a thrilling book about a heady time in one of the world’s most beautiful cities and its long shadow that extends through the twentieth century up until the present day.

Broke, blacklisted, and keeping secrets--the deadly kind. Name? Ana Calliope Holt. Occupation? Demon vermin hunter. Status in the human magic community? Rock bottom, basement level. And for a half-angel, that's quite a feat. I don't mind it--the less anyone pays me any attention, the better. Because if anyone in the mortal, angelic, or demonic realms learns I'm the reincarnation of the Red Angel, an ancient weapon that can end immortal lives, I'll be the hunted instead of doing the hunting. So, when rumors about my existence begin to circulate, I must cover up my tracks, no matter what. Unfortunately, when you're already scraping the bottom of the barrel, the only help you find is the one you probably don't want. Like the magical black market, where backstabbing is more of a competitive sport than a hobby, or the infuriating nightmare that's the angel Zel. But we don't talk about him. Because murder is illegal, and I might just strangle him. Delve into the action-packed Urban Fantasy world of the Realms, featuring a down-on-her-luck, determined heroine, angels, demons, mayhem, and a slow-burn romance. Perfect for fans of Annette Marie, Helen Harper, Linsey Hall, K.F. Breene, and Ilona Andrews.

Some secrets are too dangerous to keep. Others are too dangerous to tell. ***This is a bundled edition of the following stories.*** Earth Bound Elf Sight Assassins Of The Dead 1: Dark Blade Earth Bound Nineteen-year-old Brianne has always dreamed of leading a squad. The one thing she has no control over is holding her back. Like the Caelians' mortal enemies, the Terstens, she's earth bound. Sacred Law demands her death by her twentieth birthday. Twenty-one year old Talon is the son of the Terstens' General. Three years ago he quit the army. He can't tell anyone why he abandoned his life long dream. His secret could end the lives of him and his family. Both societies revolve around their armies, believing the other race caused the centuries long war. When circumstances bring Brianne and Talon together, they start to learn the real truth may lie beyond the Feronian Mountains, which haven't been crossed in centuries. Elf Sight Seeing what's hidden can endanger lives. Seventeen-year-old Shadow thinks their country is in bad shape if her Pa is considered one of their greatest heroes. To her he's the bitter man she has to escape before he learns the secret she's kept her entire life. Getting away, with the help of her brother Irlan, is meant to simplify things. Instead, they become involved in plots against the royal family, hidden identities and magic-wielding enemies. Assassins Of The Dead 1: Dark Blade Some heroes work in the shadows, only their deeds remembered. Meikah's family are templars, as far from necromancers as it's possible to be. When she learns that not only can she see the dead, but also wield magic, she fears what the future holds. She doesn't want to become a necromancer, or a dark blade, but there seems to be few choices now available to her. It doesn't help that people have begun to treat her like she's an evil necromancer and rumours have started. Nor does she believe Kellan when he says she belongs with the Assassins Of The Dead. They seem to be a mismatched group that include nobles, an assassin, a sorcerer, a shapeshifter and a vampire. Not at all like templars. And if she was to join them, the rumours will never end and her family might actually disown her. These stories were written by an Australian author using Australian spelling. Keywords: teen/young adult, strong female character, winged people, vampires, shapeshifters, adventure, romance.

From a multiple Edgar Award winner: Three gripping accounts of murder, betrayal, and greed that made headlines and shocked the nation. A Pulitzer Prize nominee for his landmark work, The Court-Martial of Lt. Calley, Richard Hammer is a fearless chronicler of the dark side of human nature. Here in one volume are three of his most electrifying true crime accounts. The CBS Murders: On a warm spring evening in New York City, four people were shot in a parking lot near the CBS television studios in Midtown. But detectives soon discovered that only one victim was the intended target; the others were eyewitnesses who tragically stumbled onto the scene of the crime. In this Edgar Award–winning account, the NYPD sets out on the trail of a merciless assassin, uncovering one of the most diabolical criminal conspiracies in the city’s history. “A gripping police procedural.” —Kirkus Reviews Beyond Obsession: Joyce Aparo seemed to be the perfect single mother, doting on her daughter, Karin. But behind closed doors, Joyce had been viciously abusing the sixteen-year-old violin prodigy for years. Then, Karin met the equally troubled Dennis Coleman, and the two fell head-over-heels into lustful infatuation. Soon after, Joyce’s strangled body was found under a bridge. Dennis would eventually confess to the murder, claiming Karin begged him to kill her mother. But Karin had a very different story to tell. Was this really a twisted case of love and obsession, or was Karin now manipulating the police the same way she manipulated her former boyfriend? “This true-crime tale has all the elements of a novel . . . A satisfying read.” —Library Journal The Vatican Connection: Matteo de Lorenzo was one of the New York mob’s top earners when he and his ruthless business partner, Vincent Rizzo, traveled to Europe to discuss a plan to launder millions of dollars worth of phony securities. Their partner in crime? Archbishop Paul Marcinkus, the scandal-plagued president of the Vatican Bank. What they didn’t know was that Det. Joseph Coffey was already on their trail. The legendary New York policeman worked tirelessly to trace the fraudulent stocks and bonds around the world and deep into the corridors of power in Washington, DC, and Rome. This “explosive” Edgar Award winner has “all the ingredients of a thriller” (San Francisco Chronicle).

Every once in a while, someone with unprecedented access to the truth, lifts the veil in a memoir so stark and revealing that it has the power to reframe history and our perceptions of those who defined it. Pascal Mahvi's book is one such to me. The Deadly Secrets of Iranian Princes, which spans three decades, is Mahvi's candid account of his struggle growing up straddling two cultures and in the process reconciling his own identity both as an American and a descendant of Iranian royalty. When the newly appointed Shah of Iran reaches out to Mahvi's father to become his chief advisor and confidante, young Pascal is thrust into the controversial leader's elite inner-sanctum during one of the most pivotal periods in history. The author's story of survival is at once both riveting and poignant, offering rare, intimate glimpses of the Shah at his most human away from the glare of the spotlight. It is also a window into the surprising strengths and frailties of some of the world's most famous celebrities from the deeply personal perspective of someone who unexpectedly finds himself an intimate part of their world. Told through the eyes of a son forced to become a man against a backdrop of unimaginable danger and sacrifice, Deadly Secrets of Iranian Princes is the front page story that hasn't been broken...until now. The revelations in this book, from corporate treason and corrupt government to the surreal demands of being an insider in the shadow of a nuclear arms race are sure to ignite a firestorm of controversy, especially for those whose betrayals will finally become public. More than a news story, at its heart, Deadly Secrets of Iranian Princes is also a haunting testimonial to the complexities of extreme privilege and the unforgettable chronicle of one man's quest to honor his father....
