Excerpt from Moorish Cities in Spain To see the sun hangin amid an azure sky, to watch through long indefinite minutes the indigo wreaths of shadow draping the rugged heights of the Sierra de Cordoba, to hear the dull swirl Of the river, then to turn and gaze at the city, white and motion less in the blaze of the midday sun, still encircling the sweep of the Guadalquiver, as it tumbles and eddies in its wide bed, clasped tight from bank to bank by the great Moorish bridge - these things evoke reflections on the ever-changing fate of Spain. Sad indeed is the place, sad and strangely suggestive, for the reason that we shall scarcely find elsewhere a city whose past sleeps so completely. Excerpt from The Story of the Christians and Moors of Spain Thus it has seemed to me that the eight hundred years' struggle between the Moslem and the Christian was little recollected at the present day; nor, indeed, could I find its history, romance, and poetry anywhere brought into combination. Viardot has admirably written the Moorish history, and Dozy has brought microscopic research to bear upon it; but they take history alone, and from the Moorish side. Burden's is a very good English complete history of Spain, full of matter, but many-volumed and almost forgotten and. Lady Callcott's stands nearly alone as a short popular history of great excellence. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Cordova: A City of the Moors IT would be unnecessary to enlarge upon the reasons for including a study of Cordova in this series of Spanish Handbooks: indeed a series of this description would be incomplete without it. The beautiful, powerful, and wise Cordova, the City of Cities, ' 'the Pearl of the West, ' 'the Bride of Andalus, ' as the Arabian poets have variously named it, - the ancient capital of Mohammedan Spain, is still one of the most curious and fascinating monuments of this singularly interesting country. Excerpt from The Moors in Spain Harvey were condemned as pernicious to the faith. Where once seventy public libraries had fed the minds of scholars, and half a million books had been gatheredtogether at Cordova for the benefit Of the world, such indifference to learning afterwards pre vailed, that the new capital, Madrid, possessed no public library in the eighteenth century, and even the manuscripts of the Escurial were denied in our own days to the first scholarly historian Of the Moors, though himself a Spaniard. The sixteen thousand looms Of Seville soon dwindled to a fifth of their ancient number; the arts and industries Of Toledo and Almeria faded into insignificance; the very baths - public buildings Of equal ornament and use were destroyed because cleanliness savoured too strongly Of rank infidelity. The land, deprived of the skilful irrigation Of the Moors, grew impoverished and neglected; the richest and most fertile valleys lan guished and were deserted; most Of the populous cities which had filled every district Of Andalusia fell into ruinous decay; and beggars, friars, and bandits took the place Of scholars, merchants, and knights. SO low fell Spain when she had driven away the Moors. Such is the melancholy contrast Offered by her history.
