The research presented in the various contributions to this volume clearly indicates that terminology as an inter- and transdisciplinary field of knowledge is firmly developing its theoretical foundations and practical applications in accordance with and within the framework of its overall goal: to ensure and to augment the quality of communication with professional content.

This volume provides a picture of state-of-the-art studies on terminology at the European level. Addressing a range of linguistic and cultural topics, it illustrates the diversity of terminological approaches, uses and solutions. A variety of national contexts and areas, from economics and law through to gender, environment and education, is explored to illustrate emerging national issues and practices in view of measuring and assessing them against European standards. The book discusses the selection of languages and cultural attitudes that characterize European Union countries, challenging and productive as they can be. It highlights the need to acknowledge differences in specific domains and the necessity to evaluate national policies (or indeed lack of policies) regarding terminological issues, and facilitate communication and dissemination of knowledge.

This handbook gives an overview of language for special purposes (LSP) in scientific, professional and other contexts, with particular focus on teaching and training. It provides insights into research paradigms, theories and methods while also highlighting the practical use of LSPs in concrete discourse situations. The volume is transdisciplinary oriented with a firm basis in the language sciences, including terminology, knowledge transfer, multilingual and cross-cultural exchange.

This volume brings together a selection of M. Teresa Cabré’s articles on terminology published after 1999 in journals of diverse nature and scope, many of which are difficult to access; articles in languages other than English are here provided in English translation. As a whole, these articles aim to represent the author’s groundbreaking work on terminology, both from a theoretical as from a methodological and applied point of view. Part I includes texts on three fundamental aspects of terminology as a field of knowledge: Firstly, general articles on the rethinking of proposals made by other authors and on the bases for the formulation of the Communicative Theory of Terminology (CTT). Secondly, articles that deal with the rethinking of the framework of this subject, with emphasis on specialised languages and communication. And thirdly, on the object of study: the terminological unit. Part II includes articles on methodology, international standards, and teaching terminology, and texts that deal with the intersection of terminology with other fields: Documentation, Translation, Neology, and Language Policy.

Previous work on terminology planning can be, more or less, divided into general guidelines, local planning, and translation-based activities. This book, however, by avoiding this line of research and any kind of prescription, represents a movement towards generalisation as a prerequisite of theorisation. Its research is predicated on the hypothesis that all terminological activities are founded upon some fundamental principles, which, at the same time, are manifested through context-bound variations or parameters. A particular advantage of the book is its employing of both field research and a review of research literature. The former allows it to carry out a comparative study by using a maximum variation sampling technique for gathering data from four language agencies of different ecolinguistic situations, namely Termcat (Catalan), TNC (Swedish), DGLFLF (French), and the Academy of Persian Language and Literature in Iran. In order to this, it uses a questionnaire concentrating on the macro- and micro-structures of the target organisations as a route map. The literature review allows the book to benefit from research documents from more than thirty sociolinguistic communities. The book’s unique feature includes the introduction of new concepts such as linguistics of science, systemic terminology, systemic planning, terminology argumentation, and sociocognitive terminometrics, among others. A further distinguishing feature is the fact that it discusses terminology not in a vacuum, but as a component of the language of science system.
