Excerpt from Miser's Money In mid moor there is a great plain ringed round about with hills. One hog-backed ridge blocks the southern horizon and the majestic outlines of Cater's Beam, unfretted by tor or forest, describe a gentle arc upon the sky; while northerly the land climbs again, and beneath it subtend the grazing grounds, peat cuttings and water-logged flats of Fox Tor Mire. The region glitters with little tributaries that flow to Dart, for Swincombe River, Nun's Cross Brook, the Strane and Fox Tor Gulf Stream all run through the Mire. This huge cup of jade exhibits scooped sides fretted with granite. Herein can a whole thunderstorm expend itself, or both foundations of a rainbow foot. Mists wander over its streamlets and break in waves of colourless light upon its sides; the Mire will often disappear under the grey sheets of a Dartmoor downpour; and in hard winters it lies beneath a pelt of snow, that reduces its immensity, dwarfs its details and makes Cater's Beam look like a mighty polar bear. There is little high colour at any time. Sobriety characterises its tones, as restraint marks its contours. Even in August, when the lesser furzes glow and ling washes the waste with delicate rose and pearl, the dim green and grey persist among the far flung, gloomy passages of black and broken earth. Only at clear dawns and sunsets will Fox Tor Mire sound its highest colour song, brim with delicate and transient brightness, shine through all its granite reeves and clitters, and blush over its moss bogs, where the sphagna glow ivory white, emerald green and wine purple. Upon either brink of this great basin and separated by the miles of it flung between, there stand human dwellings. Excerpt from Memoirs of Remarkable Misers, Vol. 1 of 2 It cannot be denied that in detailing the history of the different individuals in this col lection of the brotherhood, there are in the main points of great similarity. Though many of the acts of this class of persons are hid from the view of the stranger, yet there is enough in the differences of selfish display herein related to excite interest in the reader, and impart a lesson to those who feel a tendency to gratify avaricious desires. One or two foreign examples more might have been added, but the main features are essentially the same as those which are here detailed, avarice being a disease common to all natures, but most so to those in which the necessity for its existence is least apparent. Excerpt from The Miser of King's Court "Into each life some rain must fail, Some days must be dark and dreary." "I can't write any more, Olive. I'm so tired of pot-hooks;" and Topo threw down his pencil and crossed his arms upon the table. "Very well, dear. You may put your books away now." "Olive " "Yes, dear." "I want my tea. I am ever so hungry." "We must wait for mother, Topo. She is late to-night. But we must not begin till she comes." "I wish she'd be quick then." Excerpt from The Miser's Daughter In a large, crazy, old-fashioned house at the corner of the Little Sanctuary in Westminster, and facing the abbey, dwelt, in the year 1744, a person named Scarve. From his extraordinary penurious habits, he received the appellation of Starve, and was generally denominated by his neighbours "Miser Starve." Few, if any, of those who thus designated him, knew much about him, none of them being allowed to cross his threshold; but there was an air, even externally, about his dwelling, strongly indicative of his parsimonious character. Most of the windows in the upper stories, which, as is usual with habitations of that date, far overhung the lower, were boarded up; and those not thus closed were so covered with dust and dirt that it was impossible to discern any object through them. Many parts of the building were in a ruinous condition, and, where the dilapidations were not dangerous, were left in that state; but wherever some repairs were absolutely necessary to keep the structure together, they were made in the readiest and cheapest manner. The porch alone preserved its original character. It projected far beyond the door-way, and was ornamented with the arms of a former occupant of the habitation, carved in bold relief in oak, and supported by two mermaids sculptured in the same wood. All the lower windows were strongly grated, and darkened like the upper with long-accumulated dust. The door was kept constantly bolted and barred, even in the day-time; and the whole building had a dingy, dismal, and dungeon-like aspect.
