The day of honest in her administration seemed past, every avenue leading to good government in the interest of the peo ple seem-cd shut to those who loved liberty, sobriety, honesty and their country. Men, grown powerful by every diabolical scheme which human ingenuity aided by untold wealth, could devise, occu pied the high places. Escape from those human vultures seemed impossible. Good men, great and true, had tried tolead the state ih to a better way and had failed. Everywhere it was said, The task is an impossible one. After a long search, Hughes, a Baptist, a son of an old Baptist preacher, (these old Baptist preachers have a way of their own of raising great good boys to bless mankind and honor the Lord) was found. He demanded a free hand; it was given him and today as its governor, he is giving New York what no man scarcely dared dream she could have - ah honest, decent, clean government of the people. For the people and by the people; and, best of all, he is raising the standard of her sons by proclaim ing the doctrine that man is the sovereign and that an improved and elevated manhood, looking direct to and relying only on God, is the ideal to which all should aspire. Jthere has been the financial depression all over the country. Thousands have been Without work and the demands 'upon others have been heavy. I feel that this accounts in a measure for the falling off in the contributions of our women. I as your superintendent have. No lengthy report to make During the past year I have written 228 letters, 48 postals, held three meetings and traveled 427 miles. In each place I have found an earnest body of women Working in the Master's. Cause. There have been 8 new societies organized, New Hope, Sandy Bottom, Seven Springs and Union W. M. Kinston G. A New Hope, Sunbeams, and New Bern R. A. The ex enses for the year have been, printing, mailing letters and'poistals and clr culars, $12. 75, railroad fare $8. 28. The contributions for the year have been: W. M. S. Y. W. A. 20, G. A. $34. 30, R. A. $4117, and Sunbeams total. $8, 084. 65. This is $3, 000 short of what we gave last year. To make our pledge we have got to give $13, 876. 41 each year, so you see we are now behind in our work _in round figures.
