Derived in part from Joseph F. Healey’s best-selling text Race, Ethnicity, Gender, and Class, this accessible 10-chapter text teaches concepts and theories through current, engaging topics, such as the Obama election and presidency and the economic recession. An analysis of minority-dominant relations is presented clearly, reinforced through case studies, and enhanced through gender and comparative perspectives. Particular emphasis is given to the history of race and ethnicity in the United States with more coverage than any other brief text.

This text is an introduction to the sociology of minority-dominant relations and was written for students who do not have extensive backgrounds in the social sciences. I have tried to make the subject matter coherent to these students, in part by applying a unified set of themes and concepts throughout the text. The analysis is consistent and continuous, even while examining multiple perspectives and a variety of viewpoints. This subject matter is highly controversial and filled with drama, tragedy, and triumph. I have tried to deal with the issues and tell the stories behind the issues in a way that makes the text both a pleasure to read and a demonstration of the power and importance of thinking sociologically.
