Excerpt from Mine Drainage: Being a Complete and Practical Treatise on Direct-Acting Underground Steam Pumping Machinery To these younger products of the engineer's skill, the surface engine may relegate much of its work, or it may engage them as auxiliaries, for which their much greater lightness of structure, their ready portability, and the celerity with which they may be set to work, make them so well adapted. Many admirable papers on underground pumping engines have appeared in the journals and transactions of the engi neering societies from time to time, but in this scattered state they are obviously only accessible to a very limited number of persons. Moreover, the high price of some of the journals containing these papers, and the trouble and perhaps impossibility of bringing together such of these isolated papers as might be required, would prevent the general reader availing himself of them. Many of these papers are the production of promoters of the engines to which they refer. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Mine Drainage: Being a Complete Practical Treatise on Direct-Acting Underground Steam Pimping Machinery The period that has elapsed since the First edition of this work made its appearance has been characterised by considerable activity in the domain of pump design and manufacture, and by the adoption of higher ranges of steam pressure, as the succeeding pages will attest. Many of the engines in use when the work was first published have in the severe ordeal of underground work maintained their position as useful and effective pumping agents others have failed, and are now only a name in the chronicle of mine pumps. But the introduction of new types has gone on apace, and we are to-day in the presence of a bewildering variety of steam-pumping appliances. In preparing this new edition, the Author has endeavoured to give expression and consideration to these changes and develop ments in Underground Steam-pumping Machinery commensurate with their importance. He says 'underground' advisedly, as 'surface' engines are only referred to incidentally and for the purpose of comparison.
