Microstructure and Texture in Steels and Other Materials comprises a collection of articles pertaining to experimental and theoretical aspects of the evolution of crystallographic texture and microstructure during processing of steels and some other materials. Among the topics covered is the processing-microstructure-texture-property relationship in various kinds of steels, including the latest grade. Special emphasis has been given to introduce recent advances in the characterization of texture and microstructure, as well as modeling. The papers included are written by well-known experts from academia and industrial R and D, which will provide the reader with state-of-the-art, in-depth knowledge of the subject. With these attributes, Microstructure and Texture in Steels and Other Materials is expected to serve the cause of creating awareness of current developments in microstructural science and materials engineering among academic and R and D personnel working in the field.

Providing a comprehensive and invaluable overview of the basics of crystallographic textures and their industrial applications, this book covers a broad range of both structural and functional materials. It introduces the existing methods of representation in an accessible manner and presents a thorough overview of existing knowledge on texture of metallic materials. Texture analysis has widespread use in many industries, and provides crucial input towards the development of new materials and products. There has been rapid growth in the science and art of texture analysis in the last few decades. Other topics addressed within this book include recent research on texture in thin films and non-metals, and the dependence of material properties on texture, and texture control in some engineering materials. This book constitutes an invaluable reference text for researchers and professionals working on texture analysis in metallurgy, materials science and engineering, physics and geology. By using content selectively, it is also highly accessible to undergraduate students.

The study of hot band microstructure and texture during the hot rolling process is of great importance within the general context of texture development during thermomechanical material processing. In this thesis work, the microstructure and texture after hot rolling of several low carbon steel grades (LC, ELC, ULC, B-ULC and IF) are of interest. Hot band characterization is meant to be made on the basis of the influence of parameters such as finishing rolling temperature (FRT), strain at the last pass, and chemical composition. Regarding the microstructural characterization, the grain size characterization is addressed. Optical microscopy (OM) together with the AnalySIS auto image post-processing software are used. In the second part of the work, texture development for the ELC and ULC steels is further investigated by means of XRD. A correlation between the chemistry and the hot band grain size is established based for the several grades of interest. However, the effect of parameters such as FRT, strain at the last pass could not be clearly determined. The behaviour of the austenite can be traced back by the resulting transformation textures after cooling. The measured textures for the ELC and ULC materials could not make it possible to determine the behaviour of the austenite during the hot deformation. The effect of the reduction in the last rolling pass is also investigated.

Texture Analysis in Materials Science Mathematical Methods focuses on the methodologies, processes, techniques, and mathematical aids in the orientation distribution of crystallites. The manuscript first offers information on the orientation of individual crystallites and orientation distributions. Topics include properties and representations of rotations, orientation distance, and ambiguity of rotation as a consequence of crystal and specimen symmetry. The book also takes a look at expansion of orientation distribution functions in series of generalized spherical harmonics, fiber textures, and methods not based on the series expansion. The publication reviews special distribution functions, texture transformation, and system of programs for the texture analysis of sheets of cubic materials. The text also ponders on the estimation of errors, texture analysis, and physical properties of polycrystalline materials. Topics include comparison of experimental and recalculated pole figures; indetermination error for incomplete pole figures; and determination of the texture coefficients from anisotropie polycrystal properties. The manuscript is a dependable reference for readers interested in the use of mathematical aids in the orientation distribution of crystallites.
