The publications of the Hakluyt Society (founded in 1846) made available edited (and sometimes translated) early accounts of exploration. The first series, which ran from 1847 to 1899, consists of 100 books containing published or previously unpublished works by authors from Christopher Columbus to Sir Francis Drake, and covering voyages to the New World, to China and Japan, to Russia and to Africa and India. Franois Leguat (1637–1735) was a French Huguenot who became the leader of a group of seven Huguenot refugees forced to colonise the island of Rodriguez in 1693, after the French claimed their intended destination, the Ile de Runion. He remained on the island for two years, before escaping via the neighbouring island of Mauritius; after imprisonment in Jakarta, he returned to Europe in 1698. Volume 1 describes his journey to Rodriguez and provides descriptions of the island's now extinct flightless birds and giant turtles.

"Seeking Joy takes us from the chaos of Christmas in a weary world to remind us of the gift of everlasting joy found only in Jesus Christ." -Tammy Whitehurst "The weary world rejoices!" These are the words God gave Christine Trimpe over and over during a difficult season, inspiring her to go deeper with her study of joy. What she learned was life-changing: God's joy is more than abundant and carries us through our darkest trials and tribulations-seek, and you will find. When we delight in God's Word daily, we can't help but share the "good news of great joy." It's the never-ending gift with the power to positively impact the world around us. Even during times of uncertainty and major changes, the joy of the Lord sustains those who know Him and spend time in His Word. Seeking Joy through the Gospel of Luke is a twenty-five-day Christmas advent drawing us to live in the joy of the Lord despite our difficult circumstances. Beginning on December 1 with Luke 1, readers will go twenty-four days through twenty-four chapters in Luke, ending with chapter 25 for a final Christmas Day message. This Christmas season-or whenever you need an extra dose of cheer-watch how God's abundant joy influences the world forever as we experience Luke's gospel story.

Learn Something New This Christmas We hate to admit it, but after years, sometimes even decades, of reading the same Luke 2 story of Christmas, we get a little bored—we lose some of the awe we ought to have when discussing the greatest miracle in history. That’s why The Characters of Christmas was written, to help you take a fresh look at the Christmas story by getting to know the minor characters that played a part in Jesus’ birth, such as Zechariah and Elizabeth, the Shepherds, and Herod. As you slow down, engage your imagination, and enter into the stories of these women and men, you’ll see the most important character—Jesus Christ—with new eyes. And with discussion questions and a Christmas song suggestion at the end of each chapter, it’s perfect for engaging your whole family. Break free from the familiar, and discover something you never knew about the story you’ve always heard.
