The one upon the shore was the oldest and largest house in the valley, severely simple in line and with a certain air of stateliness. The broad, Colonial porch looked out upon the river and the hills beyond it, while all around, Upon the southern slope between the Opposite hills and the valley, were the great vineyards Of the Marshs', that had descended from father to son during the century that had elapsed since the house was built. The gnarled and twisted vines scarcely showed now, Upon the grey-brown back ground of the soil, but in a few places, where the snow had not yet melted, the tangled black threads were visible. Like the frame surrounding a tapestry, great pines bordered the vineyard save on the side nearest the valley, for the first of the Marshs, who had planted the vineyard and built the house, had taken care to protect his vines from the north-east storms. The clanging notes of a bell, mellowed by distance, came faintly from the valley below. Rosemary took out the thin, old watch that had been her mother's and her mother's mother's before her, and set the hands at four upon thefamily to venture out, scampered madly up a tree and looked down upon the girl with questioning, fearful eyes. Master Of The Vineyard by Myrtle Reed Myrtle Reed was born on September 27, 1874, in Norwood Park, Chicago, Illinois, the youngest of her parents' three children and their only daughter.[1] She was the daughter of author Elizabeth Armstrong Reed and the preacher Hiram von Reed. She graduated from the West Division High School, Chicago, where she edited the school's newspaper called The Voice, during which time corresponded with James Sydney McCullogh, a young Irish-Canadian who was editing a college newspaper in Toronto.[1] We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. So deeply was my mind impressed that I felt impelled to commit them to manuscript. My failing health and eyesight, during the time employed in writing these verses, seem to have been compensated by a stronger appreciation of the simplicity of the Savior's teachings - their adaptability to the human wants, and the sublime grandeur of His sufferings and death for the redemption of the human family. Dear Brother Jones: I return herewith the typewritten copy of your story in verse entitled, "The Life of the Master." I have read it with much interest and feel that it cannot fail to do good to all who read it; it is the old story beautifully retold. I trust the poem will be read by many. From my boyhood, I have always had a great fondness for gardening, and all labor incident to country life. When learning my trade in the Village printing office, I took great delight in read ing all the agricultural and horticultural exchanges. My companion apprentice, Bob, as we called him then, always thought it stupid to read papers of that kind, preferring, for himself, to follow up with great care all political con troversies, and taking great delight at the complete sum mersaults which expert politicians (in those days) some times found it convenient to make. Many of these horticultural publications I took possession of, by permis sion of the editor, and carefully preserved. I now consider them one of the important features of my little library.
