Excerpt from Maryland's Attitude in the Struggle for Canada, Vol. 7 The French and Indian War in America began in 17 54 and continued until 1760, when Canada fell into the hands of the English. The French were successful for the first four years of the war, and the frontiers of Virginia, Mary land and Pennsylvania were at the mercy of the enemy during that time. The length Of the struggle surprises one; certainly the English were stronger than the French in numbers and resources, and might have repelled the aggres sions of the French in America by one or two decisive blows. It is true that England did not lend a helping hand in this colonial war until 1755, and at first sent out several inefficient commanders, but the chief cause of ill-fortune was the failure of the colonies to cooperate with one another and with Great Britain. While the colonies were organizing or trying to organize, the French were advancing under good leadership and encircling their Opponents. To a Marylander studying this period the following ques tion suggests itself: How did my State behave? Certainly Maryland's welfare, indeed her very existence, was at stake did she do her duty?
