This guide will help you plan and run an effective project. It is written for those planning research and research and development (R&D) projects in the historic environment. Research and R&D projects funded by Historic England will be required as a condition of grant or contract to follow this guidance. Specifically this means: * using in all communications the terminology for project roles, project stages and project documents covered in this guide and associated project planning notes, and as defined in the Glossary * providing the key documents in the format set out in Appendix 2, with an accompanying document control grid and contact details * following supplementary guidance for particular project types set out in the accompanying series of Project Planning Notes, and specific guidance for funding applicants. For others working in the historic environment sector, the guide provides good practice advice based on project management both in the sector and in industries as varied as construction and IT.

Archaeological heritage conservation is all too often highly conflicted. Economic interests are often at the forefront of management decision-making with heritage values given lesser, if any, consideration, but when heritage places are managed with international principles in mind the sites stand out as evidencing superior outcomes.

This Handbook provides a transnational reference point for critical engagements with the legacies of, and futures for, global archaeological collections. It challenges the common misconception that museum archaeology is simply a set of procedures for managing and exhibiting assemblages. Instead, this volume advances museum archaeology as an area of reflexive research and practice addressing the critical issues of what gets prioritized by and researched in museums, by whom, how, and why. Through twenty-eight chapters, authors problematize and suggest new ways of thinking about historic, contemporary, and future relationships between archaeological fieldwork and museums, as well as the array of institutional and cultural paradigms through which archaeological enquiries are mediated. Case studies embrace not just archaeological finds, but also archival field notes, photographic media, archaeological samples, and replicas. In recent years more cultural institutions in hot and humid climates have been installing air-conditioning systems to protect their collections and provide comfort for both employees and visitors. This practice, however, can pose complications, including problems of installation and maintenance as well as structural damage to buildings, while failing to provide collections with a viable conservation environment. This volume offers hands-on guidance to the specific challenges involved in conserving cultural heritage in hot and humid climates. Initial chapters present scientific and geographic overviews of these climates, outline risk-based classifications for environmental control, and discuss related issues of human health and comfort.
