Named a Best Book of the Year by Financial Times "Singular, stylish and slightly intoxicating in its scope." —Rolling Stone Acclaimed media critic J. Hoberman's masterful and majestic exploration of the Reagan years as seen through the unforgettable movies of the era The third book in a brilliant and ambitious trilogy, celebrated cultural and film critic J. Hoberman's Make My Day is a major new work of film and pop culture history. In it he chronicles the Reagan years, from the waning days of the Watergate scandal when disaster films like Earthquake ruled the box office to the nostalgia of feel-good movies like Rocky and Star Wars, and the delirium of the 1984 presidential campaign and beyond. Bookended by the Bicentennial celebrations and the Iran-Contra affair, the period of Reagan's ascendance brought such movie events as Jaws, Apocalypse Now, Blade Runner, Ghostbusters, Blue Velvet, and Back to the Future, as well as the birth of MTV, the Strategic Defense Initiative, and the Second Cold War. An exploration of the synergy between American politics and popular culture, Make My Day is the concluding volume of Hoberman's Found Illusions trilogy; the first volume, The Dream Life, was described by Slate's David Edelstein as "one of the most vital cultural histories I've ever read"; Film Comment called the second, An Army of Phantoms, "utterly compulsive reading." Reagan, a supporting player in Hoberman's previous volumes, here takes center stage as the peer of Indiana Jones and John Rambo, the embodiment of a Hollywood that, even then, no longer existed.

About the book "Make My Day" "Make My Day" is the name of the column that Hilarion M. Henares Jr. wrote daily for the Philippine Daily Inquirer, and is chosen as the title of this book of collected essays. This is his Book No. 1. Larry Henares discovered that "the high and the mighty do not mind being feared, do not mind being hated -- that is the price they pay on the way to riches and power. But they hate to be made fun of and to be laughed at, because this lowers their self-esteem." This discovery by a writer who was intimate with the powers-that-be as a friend, business colleague and relative, financially independent enough to resist any bullying, and with a unique talent to move people to tears and laughter -- gave birth one of the most unique newspaper columns in journalistic history. The first piece in this book about the small size of Major Jejomar Binay of Makati, describing him as a tadpole born of constipation, and baptized with a drop of water and a grain of salt, is a classic long remembered with belly-aching laughter. Former Labor Secretary and now Senator Blas Ople is presented as a patriot but only when he is drunk and watering potted plants in hotel lobbies. Vice President Doy Laurel is pictured as a political bungler with a smile that is halfway between a snarl and a smirk. Likewise, the readers are served with a Central Bank governor as a pompous ass, a Defense Secretary as a duck with a penchant for self-destruction, and an economic czarina as a screaming banshee who blows cigarette smoke at protagonists in TV debates. Yet Henares can move his readers to shed tears unashamedly at the death of a friend, as he did with Elvira and Tito Manahan, Lando Olalia, and Rrex Baquiran. His hospital drama, "Maxicart! Maxicart!" is a classic long remembered by doctors. His essays on the Filipino male as a lover, on The Kiss, the art of insult, the negro race, the Great White Father -- all included in this volume -- are replete with original insights and unparalleled mastery of subject and style. The other books by Henares released simultaneously are entitled "Nice and Nasty," "Cecilia My Love," and "Sweet and Sour." ----------- About the Author Hilarion M. Henares Jr., known as Larry Henares, is a graduate of Ateneo de Manila, University of the Philippines, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, an engineer, economist, educator, big businessman, writer, civic leader, public servant, and hobbyist (guns, books, amateur radio and electronics). He is a film maker who won the Famas Academy Award for the Best Documentary of the Year. He was a businessman who was awarded Young Businessman of the Year, and the Industrialist of the Year by the Business Writers Association. He was an educator who was dean of two graduate schools before the age of 25. He became the President of the Philippine Chamber of Industries, and a member of the Presidential Cabinet as the Chairman of the National Economic Council. He is a writer known for his essays on economics, history, art and culture, a front page columnist in the pre-martial law Manila Times and the most widely read column in the Philippines, according to all surveys, the daily "Make my Day" in the Philippine Daily Inquirer, after the EDSA revolt. He wrote daily commentaries in many Philippine newspapers until he resigned in 2000, to take up his duties as Presidential Consultant on National Affairs to Philippine Presidents, Fidel V. Ramos and Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. Dr. Hilarion M. Henares, Jr., has a degree as Doctor of Economics. At the age of 30, he was already the head of a multi-million peso business enterprise. Henares became the President of the powerful Philippine Chamber of Industries, and eventually a member of the presidential cabinet as the Chairman of the National Economic Council and Presidential Assistant on Community Development. Today I feel silly. Mom says it's the heat. I put rouge on the cat and gloves on my feet. I ate noodles for breakfast and pancakes at night. I dressed like a star and was quite a sight. Today I am sad, my mood's heavy and gray. There's a frown on my face and it's been there all day. My best friend and I had a really big fight. She said that I tattled and I know that she's right. Silly, cranky, excited, or sad--everyone has moods that can change each day. Jamie Lee Curtis's zany and touching verse, paired with Laura Cornell's whimsical and original illustrations, helps kids explore, identify, and, even have fun with their ever-changing moods. Here's another inspired picture book from the bestselling author-illustrator team of Tell Me Again About the Night I Was Born and When I Was Little: A Four-Year-Old's Memoir of Her Youth.

The film critic’s sweeping analysis of American cinema in the Cold War era is both “utterly compulsive reading [and] majestic” in its “breadth and rigor” (Film Comment). An Army of Phantoms is a major work of film history and cultural criticism by leading film critic J. Hoberman. Tracing the dynamic interplay between politics and popular culture, Hoberman offers “the most detailed year-by-year look at Hollywood during the first decade of the Cold War ever published, one that takes film analysis beyond the screen and sets it in its larger political context” (Los Angeles Review of Books). By “tell[ing] the story not just of what’s on the screen but of what played out behind it,” Hoberman demonstrates how the nation’s deep-seated fears and wishes were projected onto the big screen. In this far-reaching work of historical synthesis, Cecil B. DeMille rubs shoulders with Douglas MacArthur, atomic tests are shown on live TV, God talks on the radio, and Joe McCarthy is bracketed with Marilyn Monroe (The American Scholar). From cavalry Westerns to apocalyptic sci-fi flicks, and biblical spectaculars; from movies to media events, congressional hearings and political campaigns, An Army of Phantoms “remind[s] you what criticism is supposed to be: revelatory, reflective and as rapturous as the artwork itself” (Time Out New York). “An epic . . . alternately fevered and measured account of what might be called the primal scene of American cinema.” —Cineaste “There’s something majestic about the reach of Hoberman’s ambitions, the breadth and rigor of his research, and especially the curatorial vision brought to historical data.” —Film Comment

Based on a Navy SEAL's inspiring graduation speech, this #1 New York Times bestseller of powerful life lessons "should be read by every leader in America" (Wall Street Journal). If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed. On May 17, 2014, Admiral William H. McRaven addressed the graduating class of the University of Texas at Austin on their Commencement day. Taking inspiration from the university's slogan, "What starts here changes the world," he shared the ten principles he learned during Navy Seal training that helped him overcome challenges not only in his training and long Naval career, but also throughout his life; and he explained how anyone can use these basic lessons to change themselves-and the world-for the better. Admiral McRaven's original speech went viral with over 10 million views. Building on the core tenets laid out in his speech, McRaven now recounts tales from his own life and from those of people he encountered during his military service who dealt with hardship and made tough decisions with determination, compassion, honor, and courage. Told with great humility and optimism, this timeless book provides simple wisdom, practical advice, and words of encouragement that will inspire readers to achieve more, even in life's darkest moments. "Powerful." --USA Today "Full of captivating personal anecdotes from inside the national security vault." --Washington Post "Superb, smart, and succinct." --Forbes
