We are happy to embrace you with our rich new edition. Undoubtedly, one of the most negatively-affected elements of the coronavirus precautions is the musical events. Maybe the concerts had to be cancelled but artists continued to reach us thanks to the digital platforms. We enhanced our souls with the power of music. We are appreciated for all of these artists. You are going to notice that, in this edition apart from Turkey there are also precious music producers from Iran, Greece, Netherlands and Canada. Introducing you various musical colours from different regions of the world and witnessing that our periodical is one of the worldwide ones in its field is an additonal satisfaction. Music is an energy source for a nation. We fervently emphasise the necessity of supporting these labourers who produce music and assisting them with solid steps. Having the belief that we have overtaken the hard times, we wish all of you fresh and healthy summers with plenty of music.

Little did we know that the pandemic with which we met last spring, would affect our lives so radically and drastically. Undoubtedly, the majority were up for the idea “We will stay home for a while and then everything is going to be as it was before.” The reality, however, is way worse... A year passed in terms of our coexistence with the covid-19. Social life was shut down, reopened, reclosed and now it is opened, again. From now on, on condition that social distance rules are taken seriously, everyone is free to go to restaurants, to cafes or even to malls. Nonetheless, people get used to use public transportation, aeroplanes or underground without social distancing rules. There is one reality in this process which is the infeasible state of listening to music even if we submit to the social distance rules. If for another while the current situation continues like that, it is going to be very late. Seeing ex-singers working in different sectors since their only income source had been shut down and they do not receive a salary will highly be likely. Even worse, this will probably end up losing an entire musically-qualified generation. Education of an artist is an arduous process so we must appreciate their worth. Our history demonstrates us with countless examples that having artists in our society is something priceless. A fruitful issue is ready for the taking. The best sentence of this one belongs to Prof Dr Fazlı Arslan who says “Reading is the cornerstone of development.” We wish you would be able to switch to white pages that liberate our imagination from black screens which “formalise” our vision.

Dear beloved music readers... We are leaving behind hard times with a shiny summer. We have all been adversely affected by the pandemic. Seeing the pandemic as a thing of the past is our biggest wish. What we must keep from these days is to remember the significance of the world which is the home of all of us. We should also take care of our houses and give them the proper respect. Dear friends, Hasan Saltık passed away. He was an irreplaceable individual. What he did for music and Anatolian culture will never be forgotten. Unfortunately, we fail to keep good souls in this world enough. Bad people cannot get away with what they do. It is this reality that prevents us from losing our faith for justice. This issue is full of precious interviews and articles. Makam Music Magazine is the representative of the Turkish Music in printed press. Makam Music Magazine addresses a wide range of topics on every page of it, related to Turkish music, including its journey of music over time, its types, performers, educators, instruments and concert venues. In every issue, Makam Music Magazine also aims to increase international awareness about Turkish music by means of interviews with the people and organizations making Turkish Music in foreign countries and by addresing the interaction between the music of that country and Turkish Music.

Creating Global Music in Turkey looks at the rise of ”world music” in Turkey by analyzing this country’s various “traditional” or ethnic music forms. The book focuses on the uniquely Turkish musical forms exemplified by Gypsy, Sufi, and Folk music, and explores how these have been incorporated into the global discourses of world music. In doing so, the book also shows how the place-making strategies of globalization are embodied through the construction of an “authentic” Istanbul sound under the label of world music. The reader is invited to consider each musical tradition as being a unique realm in its incorporation into world music. The process of incorporation and appropriation is explained by examination of the specificities of each realm. This book is unique within the relevant literature, focusing on the production of a global cultural form outside of the Western world. It uses the findings of comprehensive ethnographic research to reveal to the reader the strategies of actors, the discursive mechanisms in the field, and how the world music markets operate.
