Excerpt from Mahatma Gandhi and Karl Marx: A Study of Selected Social Thinkers Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, popularly known as 'Bapu' - the Father of Indian nation, was born on October 2, 1869, at Porbandar, India. He was enjoying the boyhood days of his fourteenth year when Karl Marx, after having attained his climax, had breathed his last. Gandhi, as a boy, was unconcerned with the world affairs though he was brought up in an anti-British atmosphere. Obviously, there was little in his early life to show that he was destined to become one of the most magnetic personalities and most compelling leaders of our country's long history. Gandhi was married at 13 and at 19, when already a father, he went to London to study law. For three years he lived frugally in London on $20 a month and then returned to India as a qualified barrister and a member of Inner Temple. He was, later in 1922, debarred from the membership of the Inner Temple on account of receiving a sentence of six years' imprisonment by the Indian courts. At the age of 23, he went to South Africa in a law case and stayed there for twenty years, seeking to improve the status of his fellow Indians, who were discriminated against because of their dark skins. There he developed his philosophy of nonviolent civil disobedience as a means towards political ends. He returned to India in 1914, gave away his property, and took to wearing a saintly dress of loin-cloth to symbolize his joining the repressed millions who could afford no more. He preached political and economic freedom from England and urged the wiping out of religious enmities among Hindus and Muslims. He launched a vigourous movement to attain political, economic, social and cultural freedom for India. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Part of the SAGE Social Thinkers series, this brief and clearly-written book provides a concise introduction to the work, life, and influences of Karl Marx, one of the most revered, reviled, and misunderstood figures in modern history. The book serves as an excellent introduction to the full range of Marx’s major themes—alienation, economics, social class, capitalism, communism, materialism, environmental sustainability—and considers the extent to which they are relevant today. It is ideal for use as a self-contained volume or in conjunction with other sociological theory textbooks.

First published over fifty years ago, Isaiah Berlin's compelling portrait of the father of socialism has long been considered a classic of modern scholarship and the best short account written of Marx's life and thought. It provides a penetrating, lucid, and comprehensive introduction to Marx as theorist of the socialist revolution, illuminating his personality and ideas, and concentrating on those which have historically formed the central core of Marxism as a theory and practice. Berlin goes on to present an account of Marx's life as one of the most influential and incendiary social philosophers of the twentieth century and depicts the social and political atmosphere in which Marx wrote. This edition includes a new introduction by Alan Ryan which traces the place of Berlin's Marx from its pre-World War II publication to the present, and elucidates why Berlin's portrait, in the midst of voluminous writings about Marx, remains the classic account of the personal and political side of this monumental figure.
