The Survey makes accessible the core knowledge of the sciences to curious readers with no special preparation. Within the 377 articles here, 141 cover the major subfields of physical geology, 26 treat areas of economic geology, from essential minerals and other earth resources to the variety of ways man harnesses geothermal, wind, ocean, solar, and nuclear power. Thirty articles examine a range of issues in geochemistry. Geophysics is given full coverage in 35 articles. The planet's history, as well as its impact on the development of life and various early life forms, is explored in 22 articles on fossils, ice ages, dinosaurs, mass extinctions, and evolution. Water is examined in all its forms and sources in 27 articles. There are 36 articles on the solar system, eight on major mountain ranges, soils are done in eight, the atmosphere in 18. Averaging seven pages, articles begin with ready-reference matter and a list of principal terms. A summary section forms the major part of each article, providing a description of either the phenomenon or the methodology. "Context," the concluding section of each essay, presents the conclusions, applications, and implications derived from investigation of the topic. Finally, an annotated, selected bibliography directs the reader to sources that are accessible to the nonspecialist. Cross-references lists articles that offer additional information on the same or a related topic.

"Thoughtfully compiled, current, and reasonably priced.... Recommended as a 'one-stop-shopping' source..". -- Library Journal "This work is an essential purchase for libraries with collections in the four designated areas". -- ARBA Both print and nonprint sci-tech information sources can be quickly located, and their uses evaluated, with this new resource -- the only sourcebook to cover all four major branches of science. More than 2,400 entries of complete bibliographic information are accompanied by a brief description of each work. Every source is indexed by author, subject, and title. Special chapters cover how technology is changing the way scientists communicate, and how to build a viable collection in specific disciplines.

A surge of interest in the geomechanical and petrophysical properties of mudrocks (shales) has taken place in recent years following the development of a shale gas industry in the United States and elsewhere, and with the prospect of similar developments in the UK. Also, these rocks are of particular importance in excavation and construction geotechnics and other rock engineering applications, such as underground natural gas storage, carbon dioxide disposal and radioactive waste storage. They may greatly influence the stability of natural and engineered slopes. Mudrocks, which make up almost three-quarters of all the sedimentary rocks on Earth, therefore impact on many areas of applied geoscience. This volume focuses on the mechanical behaviour and various physical properties of mudrocks. The 15 chapters are grouped into three themes: (i) physical properties such as porosity, permeability, fluid flow through cracks, strength and geotechnical behaviour; (ii) mineralogy and microstructure, which control geomechanical behaviour; and (iii) fracture, both in laboratory studies and in the field.
