Focusing on methodologies, applications and challenges of textual data analysis and related fields, this book gathers selected and peer-reviewed contributions presented at the 14th International Conference on Statistical Analysis of Textual Data (JADT 2018), held in Rome, Italy, on June 12-15, 2018. Statistical analysis of textual data is a multidisciplinary field of research that has been mainly fostered by statistics, linguistics, mathematics and computer science. The respective sections of the book focus on techniques, methods and models for text analytics, dictionaries and specific languages, multilingual text analysis, and the applications of text analytics. This commemorative volume is the 12th edition in the Nigerian Linguists Festschrift Series devoted to Professor (Mrs.) Appolonia Uzoaku Okwudishu. The majority of the papers were presented at the 27th Annual Conference of the Linguistic Association of Nigerian (CLAN) which was held at the Benue State University, Makurdi, Nigeria, and the 26th CLAN which was held at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. The title derives from the theme of the 27th CLAN: Language Endangerment: Globalisation and the Fate of Minority Languages in Nigeria. A large number of the papers address the major theme of the conference, while the balance address various aspects of Nigerian linguistics, languages, communication, and literature. Fifty-one papers are included, ranging from sociolinguistics through applied linguistics to formal areas of linguistics which include phonology, morphology and syntax of Nigerian languages. Papers on language endangerment and language revitalisation strategies for safeguarding the vanishing indigenous tongues of Nigeria are the major focus, and the book serves as important reference material in various aspects of language and linguistic studies in Nigeria.

French Today is a profile of the French language in its social context. British and French linguists examine trends in French throughout the French-speaking world, and address issues around prescriptivism, gender and language, and regional languages and dialects. The collection includes overviews of work done in particular areas and deeper analyses of sociolinguistic questions. One theme is how to represent and interpret data relating to language varieties that have been marginalised. Another concerns the ways in which French is adapting to the future, whether as a language of new technology, or as a vehicular language on the continent. All chapters of this book are in English, with examples and quotations in French, and a mixture of references given in both languages. At the end of each chapter, there are also texts in French, serving as illustration and as pointers to further reading.
