Longarm’s after a killer who slays with fire… In her youth, her fiery temper and wild ways earned her the nickname Naughty Nellie. But this close kin to Marshal Billy Vail is no killer—at least Billy doesn’t think so. A jury in Carson City disagrees, and they’ve sentenced Nellie to hang for burning her husband alive in their marriage bed. Billy has always turned to his best deputy marshal to put out his fires—but this time it’s personal. Longarm barely has time to rekindle his romance with a Denver waitress before he lights out for Carson City. After he sees Nellie, he’s determined to make sure an innocent widow doesn’t go to the gallows—and a match-happy murderer burns in hell…

When events spin out of control…only Slocum can ride out the storm. Driving the stagecoach to Fort Stockton without a shotgun messenger is keeping John Slocum on his toes. He’s carrying a huge payroll for the Army, and he’s dead sure road agents are after it. But before Slocum can tackle the sharpshooter that’s after the gold, he’s caught up in the tornado that destroys half the town. It seems Slocum’s got a knack for surviving—except now he’s got to help find the missing payroll, or wind up in jail. And there’s a mysterious lady with flame-red hair and a strange request that could be deadlier than the storm…

Originally published in 1915, when Jennings Cropper Wise was commandant of the Virginia Military Institute, The Long Arm of Lee has never been surpassed as an authoritative study of the Confederate artillery in the Civil War. Volume 1 described the organization and tactics of the field batteries of General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia from the time of the Battle of Bull Run through the Maryland invasion. Volume 2, beginning with an account of the Chancellorsville campaign, includes a close look at the Battle of Gettysburg, in which tactical errors made by the Confederate side are reassessed. There was heroism aplenty, not only from generals like J.E.B. Stuart and Stonewall Jackson but also from ordinary artillerymen who fought doggedly and resignedly until the end.
