The Internet of Things (IoT) is transforming the way organizations communicate, collaborate, and coordinate everyday business and industrial processes. Adoption of IoT technologies has proven beneficial to organizations that manage large numbers of assets and coordinate complex and distributed processes. Decades ago, the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) pioneered the sensor, computer networking, and communications technology that serve as the foundation of IoT, but today the U.S. military is struggling to equip its workforce with the basic functions provided by commercial smartphones. DoD continues to drive innovation in advanced sensors and control systems, but it is falling behind in deployment of IoT technologies that have the potential to deliver new capabilities and cost savings. Based on in-depth research and interviews with 29 government and industry executives and subject matter experts, this report suggests ways in which the U.S. military could better leverage IoT technologies to improve efficiency and effectiveness.

IoT for Defense and National Security Practical case-based guide illustrating the challenges and solutions of adopting IoT in both secure and hostile environments IoT for Defense and National Security covers topics on IoT security, architecture, robotics, sensing, policy, operations, and more, including the latest results from the premier IoT research initiative of the U.S. Defense Department, the Internet of Battle Things. The text also discusses challenges in converting defense industrial operations to IoT and summarizes policy recommendations for regulating government use of IoT in free societies. As a modern reference, this book covers multiple technologies in IoT including survivable tactical IoT using content-based routing, mobile ad-hoc networks, and electronically formed beams. Examples of IoT architectures include using KepServerEX for edge connectivity and AWS IoT Core and Amazon S3 for IoT data. To aid in reader comprehension, the text uses case studies illustrating the challenges and solutions for using robotic devices in defense applications, plus case studies on using IoT for a defense industrial base. Written by leading researchers and practitioners of IoT technology for defense and national security, IoT for Defense and National Security also includes information on: Changes in warfare driven by IoT weapons, logistics, and systems IoT resource allocation (monitoring existing resources and reallocating them in response to adversarial actions) Principles of AI-enabled processing for Internet of Battlefield Things, including machine learning and inference Vulnerabilities in tactical IoT communications, networks, servers and architectures, and strategies for securing them Adapting rapidly expanding commercial IoT to power IoT for defense For application engineers from defense-related companies as well as managers, policy makers, and academics, IoT for Defense and National Security is a one-of-a-kind resource, providing expansive coverage of an important yet sensitive topic that is often shielded from the public due to classified or restricted distributions.

"The great power competition has led to the realization that the Air Force needs to be ready for a peer conflict of the future, which it hasn’t faced since the end of the Cold War. This future conflict will require a networked Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (C4ISR) capability that is able to prosecute intelligence collected in seconds, then give that information to a shooter to decide and act. The realization for this capability has led to the development of the Advanced Battle Management System (ABMS) program. The ultimate goal of ABMS is to create the military Internet of Things (IoT), which comes from the IoT of the commercial world. In order for the Air Force to make the military IoT it will need to leverage commercial technology such as edge computing, machine learning, and cloud data storage. Furthermore, initiatives at DARPA such as Adapting Cross-Domain Kill Webs (ACK) and System of Systems Integration Technology and Experimentation (SoSITE) will need to be used to realize this capability. Additionally, the new acquisition approach model for ABMS can provide useful technology now by implementing DevOps. Finally, the Air Force culture will need to transform its force to think about how the network created is more important than the platforms themselves. This papers intent is to determine how the military internet of things can bring the Air Force C4ISR into the 21st century."--Abstract.
