Excerpt from Letter on the Present Crisis Under these circumstances the inquiries - How this state of things has been brought about, and What is to be the remedy, are questions which deeply agitate the public mind. It is quite clear that there has been no deliberate, preconceived design, on the part of the North to originate any system of measures to destroy the Union - nothing intended to effect such a resuBut, admitting there was no such design, it is contended by the South that measures have been taken of such oppressive character, and so destructive of the equal rights of their section, as to compel a separation. Adequate Remedies Within The Constitution For All Complaints Made. It is a sufficient answer to such allegations, that, if any wrongs have been committed, the Constitution itself furnishes a remedy. There are at least two sufficient means of redress of such grievances, before it can be necessary to resort to the measure of an overthrow of the government. We can appeal to the calm, deliberate decision of our National Judiciary, whose duty it is to construe the Constitution according to the original intent and design of its framers. Excerpt from A Letter to a Late Cabinet Minister on the Present Crisis The Duke of Wellington has obtained many victories, but he never yet has obtained fa vic tory over the English People - That battle is now to be adventured; it has been tried before, but in vain. On far worse ground the great Captain hazards it again; for his first battle was to prevent giving power to the people the power obtained, his second is to resist it. It is the usual fate of fortunate warriors, that their old age is the sepulchre of their renown. No man has read the history of England without compassion for the hero of Anne's time. Marl borough in his glory, and Marlborough in his dotage; what a satire in the contrast! With a genius for war, it may be, equal; with a genius. Excerpt from What Have the Whigs Done?: Or an Answer to Mr. Edward Lytton Bulwer's Letter on the "Present Crisis" The 'opening paragraph is bad in style, as well as in taste. The Duke of Wellington has obtained many victories, but he never yet has obtained a we tory over the English people. - That is very true the Duke of Wellington never has, and never will attempt to do any such thing. When he has come forward, it has been to lead the English people, 'not to oppose them. If he has not been so successful. Excerpt from A Letter to the People of Great Britain, on the Present Alarming Crisis In order to clear up this point beyond a doubt, it becomes necessary to form a a little retrospection, and to lay before you a short narrative of those celebrated patriotic ministers, who, in the beginning, erected the iniquitous basis of this destructive plan: for which purpose I shall date the melancholy aera from the traiterous and inglorious peace of Utrecht. Excerpt from A Few Words on the Spirit in Which Men Are Meeting the Present Crisis in the Church: A Letter to Roundell Palmer, Esq. Q. C., M. P Much of this was apparent in the meeting lately held at Willis's Rooms; and some of those very evils were brought under the notice of those present. One could scarcely avoid being struck with something too like irreverence in the course of the free discussion of these topics by the clergy. The frequent introduction of mat ter ill-suited to the platform, the mode in which such statements were received by an excited audi ence, left behind an impression of great lack of religious reverence. Men were driven to feel, in the case of clerical speeches, that when the speech was clerical it was out of keeping with the place; and when it was political, and consequently con sistent, it was out of keeping with the Speaker.
