La célèbre IIIe Légion Auguste est déjà bien connue ; les unités auxiliaires le sont moins. Pourtant, leur rôle fut loin d'être négligeable. Recrutées à partir de contingents venus d'autres régions, de la Pannonie à Palmyre, ou chez les Africains eux-mêmes, leurs garnisons, déployées jusqu'aux confins du désert, relayaient l'action de la Légion. Dans les territoires qu'elles contrôlaient, toutes ont joué un rôle, certes fondamentalement militaire, mais aussi politique, socio-économique et culturel.
