L’enseignement du français comme langue seconde auprès des élèves nouvellement arrivés constitue désormais une dimension reconnue dans les apprentissages du français à l’École. Si la connaissance des publics s’est affinée, si les dispositifs d’accueil sont mieux établis, en revanche les objectifs et pratiques d’apprentissage dans la diversité des compétences attendues demandent à être mieux décrits, notamment en relation avec le niveau des élèves à leur arrivée, dans la maîtrise de l’écrit, comme dans les autres domaines des savoirs scolaires. This manual contains overviews on language acquisition and distinguishes between first- and second-language acquisition. Within the field of second language acquisition, interest in the acquisition of French as a second language has a long-standing tradition, especially in the European context. The aim of this book is to offer a synthesis of current research within this area. It contains contributions from different researchers in the field, including studies on the acquisition of grammar, formulaic language, lexis and pragmatic devices, and covering interlanguage development from beginner level up to very advanced, presumably near-native levels of proficiency. The learners in the studies reported in the volume represent different L1 backgrounds and age groups. The chapters shed light on current issues in research on second language acquisition from different theoretical perspectives, and contribute to a better understanding of L2 French and SLA in general. How can teacher education prepare future teachers for their work in increasingly diverse classrooms? How does the concept of plurilingualism inform language educational policy in different countries? What are the current opportunities and challenges in the domain of internationalisation in teacher education? The contributions to this volume address these questions from different theoretical perspectives, and with a strong emphasis on the actual practices in various classrooms. At a time when simplistic, essentialist, biased, and discriminatory ideologies and practices see a rebirth in public discourse, and represent a risk to education, the contributors here take stock and describe some worthwhile alternatives. The first set of chapters addresses the integration of ethnic, religious, and gender diversity in teacher education colleges. In the second part, the notion of plurilingualism in different educational contexts is explored from a critical sociolinguistic point of view. The chapters in the third part present evidence from innovative international academic exchange programs and how they contribute to socio-spatial learning amongst others. The common denominator in this volume is the notion of convergence – the coexistence of people and practices in diverse contexts.
