Excerpt from Greek Prose Composition Part I contains, in graded lessons, the principal points of Greek syntax, the unusual and non-essential being purposely omitted. These lessons are designed for use at the beginning of the second year's study of Greek, thereby serving as a partial review of the first year's work and as an introduction to the composition work in connection with the reading of Xenophon's Anabasis. Part II contains short, simple English sentences, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. These should be used daily in connection with the reading of the text. Part III contains connected English prose, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. This is carefully graded, so that the stu dent who performs faithfully the work outlined here will be able to pass the entrance examination of any of the American colleges. The method of writing Greek at sight used in this book needs a word of explanation. It is the outgrowth of the author's personal experience in the classroom, and his belief that the best results can be obtained only by systematic practice in connection with the regular work. Excerpt from Latin and Greek Verse This volume is published in compliance with a wish very warmly expressed by numerous friends and admirers of Professor Evans. Those who are more immediately responsible for its issue have been actuated, independently of this external appeal, by an affectionate desire to furnish a memorial of an original and highly gifted man, considered by many to have few rivals in his special department of scholarship. They venture also to hope that it may exercise some reinvigorating influence upon a branch of scholarship which has flourished in this country in the past, but is at present, in the opinion of some competent judges, exhibiting unmistakable symptoms of decay. The compositions now given to the public are only a portion of a much larger number found amongst Professor Evans's papers. Many of those that are withheld well merit publication. Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Excerpt from The Poetry of Catullus The favourites of the gods are released from life before they have had time to outstay their youth. The tribute to those who died young is tribute to the youth which they never lived to lose - ih part, no doubt, objective, but in part also subjective, and prompted by the thought expressed in that line of Thackeray: Oh, the brave days, when we were twenty-one! This book contains a selection of pagan Greek poetic texts ranging in date from the first to the sixth century AD. It makes easily accessible for the first time work by poets such as Quintus Smyrnaeus, Nonnus, Musaeus and Babrius hitherto neglected in Classical syllabuses. Genres represented include epic, epyllion, didactic, epigram, lyric and the verse fable. There is a brief general introduction, and in addition each section of detailed commentary is prefaced by a discussion of literary aspects of the poems and of their wider contexts. The book is intended primarily for undergraduate and graduate students of Greek, but will be of interest also to Classical scholars.
