Latin American theater is rooted in the rich historical traditions of both the indigenous cultures of the region and those of Spain. In the second half of the 20th century, immigration to Latin America from Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia also proved influential, and theater became a means of social protest. The military and political dictatorships of the late 20th century often censored plays and persecuted playwrights. This book examines the process of transnationalization of Latin American television industries. Drawing upon six representative case studies spanning the subcontinent’s vast and diverse geo-political and cultural landscape, the book offers a unique exploration of the ongoing formation of interrelated cultural, technological, and political landscapes, from the mid-1980s to the present. The chapters analyse the international circulation of the genres and formats of entertainment television across the subcontinent to explore the main driving forces propelling the production and consumption of television contents in the region, and what we can learn about the cultural and social identities of Latin American audiences following the journey of genres, formats, and media personalities beyond their own national borders. Taking a contemporary interdisciplinary approach to the study of transnational television industries, this book will be of significant interest to scholars and students of television and film studies, communication studies, Latin American studies, global media studies, and media and cultural industries.

The Decades of Modern American Drama series provides a comprehensive survey and study of the theatre produced in each decade from the 1930s to 2009 in eight volumes. Each volume equips readers with a detailed understanding of the context from which work emerged: an introduction considers life in the decade with a focus on domestic life and conditions, social changes, culture, media, technology, industry and political events; while a chapter on the theatre of the decade offers a wide-ranging and thorough survey of theatres, companies, dramatists, new movements and developments in response to the economic and political conditions of the day. The work of the four most prominent playwrights from the decade receives in-depth analysis and re-evaluation by a team of experts, together with commentary on their subsequent work and legacy. A final section brings together original documents such as interviews with the playwrights and with directors, drafts of play scenes, and other previously unpublished material. The major writers and their works to receive in-depth coverage in this volume include: * William Inge: Picnic (1953), Bus Stop (1955) and The Dark at the Top of the Stairs (1957); * Stephen Sondheim, Arthur Laurents and Jerome Robbins: West Side Story (1957) and Gypsy (1959); * Alice Childress: Just a Little Simple (1950), Gold Through the Trees (1952) and Trouble in Mind (1955); * Jerome Lawrence and Robert Lee: Inherit the Wind (1955), Auntie Mame (1956) and The Gang's All Here (1959).

Rappaccini's Daughter is the Mexican Nobel laureate Octavio Paz' lyrical tale of love, death and living for the present. Night of the Assassins is Cuban Jose Triana's controversial masterpiece, in which three siblings plot the murder of their parents. Griselda Gambaro's Saying Yes is an Argentine black comedy about man's grotesque inhumanity to man. Orchids in the Moonlight is Carlos Fuentes' dream play about the love between two Mexican women exiled in Hollywood's maze of mirrors. In Mistress of Desires, Mario Vargas Llosa erotically interweaves reality and fantasy as he investigates sex and money in darkest Peru.
