Este volumen es el resultado de las ponencias presentadas en el curso sobre “Desarrollo Urbano, Problemática Social y Calidad de Vida en las Ciudades de América Latina”, organizado en abril de 1992 por el Patronat Sud-Nord de la Universitat de València y en el que se dieron cita destacados especialistas e investigadores urbanos en diferentes disciplinas y procedentes de distintas nacionalidades. En el mismo se profundiza en algunas de las cuestiones que más preocupan a los gobiernos locales, destacando no sólo los problemas sino también las oportunidades que ofrecen las ciudades latinoamericanas, compaginando las reflexiones teóricas con la aportación de ejemplos prácticos de gestión y planificación urbana en la actualidad. Estas ponencias, novedosas en muchas de sus reflexiones, han de servir para orientar nuevas investigaciones, así como también otras formas de analizar las cuestiones planteadas desde el actor urbano que interviene efectivamente en la ciudad.

Beginning with volume 41 (1979), the University of Texas Press became the publisher of the Handbook of Latin American Studies, the most comprehensive annual bibliography in the field. Compiled by the Hispanic Division of the Library of Congress and annotated by a corps of more than 130 specialists in various disciplines, the Handbook alternates from year to year between social sciences and humanities. The Handbook annotates works on Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean and the Guianas, Spanish South America, and Brazil, as well as materials covering Latin America as a whole. Megacity development and the inherent risks and opportunities for humans and the environment is a theme of growing urgency in the 21st century. Focusing on Latin America where urbanization is most advanced, this book studies the complexity of a ‘mega-urban system’ and explores interrelations between sectors and issues by providing an in-depths study of one particular city, Santiago de Chile.
