Against this current trend of low growth and high uncertainty, business directors must work with their shareholders to set strategic objectives and define business models. The great number of possible strategies makes this type of management very complex, and the actual deployment of strategic choices is often limited by a lack of overall coherence within the organization. This problem calls for an appropriate and renewed response. In strategic management today, a closer, permanent dialogue is needed between operational and financial performance. Based on a supply chain approach, the Value Added Supply Chain (VASC) model focuses on driving operational performance, but aims to achieve a greater and more dynamic integration between these two dimensions of the company's value creation.

Provides separate estimates of the influence of borrowing by both men and women, through three credit programs, on a variety of household and individual outcomes, including school enrollment, labor supply, the asset holdings of women, recent fertility and use of contraceptives, consumption, and the anthropometric status of children. The findings show that credit provided to women is more likely to influence these behaviors than credit provided to men and has a significant effect on the well-being of poor households in Bangladesh.

The topic of the 43rd Congress of the International Institute of Public Finance was "Public Finance and the Performance of Enterprises." The title reflected profound changes in the thinking and approaches of economists traced back to economic developments such as the worldwide slowing down of economic growth, dwindling of productivity increases, growing unemployment, and rampant increase in public debt experienced during the 1970s and 80s. The Congress was not primarily concerned therefore with the economic efficiency of particular enterprises, but with the interface of Public Finance and the behavior of enterprises. The intent was to detect how fiscal policy decisions effect the behavior of enterprises and how this in turn influences the overall performance of an economy--to seek microeconomic foundations for macroeconomic relationships. This volume presents the proceedings of the 43rd Congress with papers from numerous international contributors.
