This volume focuses on the learning of host-country languages by migrants in Europe. It identifies, clarifies, and offers insights into issues and central questions related to the learning of host-country languages with an emphasis on adolescent and adult language learners in formal and informal settings. The book draws on data collected following the refugee ‘crisis’ in Europe of 2015-16, which led to dramatic increases in the number of migrants arriving in Europe.

Adult Language Education and Migration: Challenging Agendas in Policy and Practice provides a lively and critical examination of policy and practice in language education for adult migrants around the world, showing how opportunities for learning the language of a new country both shape and are shaped by policy moves. The linguistic integration of migrants affects every aspect of settling in a new country (employment, health, etc.). The aim of this collection of texts is to propose a number of specific measures member states can take to help adult migrants become acquainted with the language of the host country. The main focus is on organising language courses that meet migrants’ real communication needs. It is not enough for authorities simply to consider the technical aspects of such courses, they should also design and conduct them in accordance with the fundamental values of the Council of Europe. A number of issues concerning the linguistic integration of adult migrants are presented here, beginning with the notion of linguistic integration itself. Family reunion, the nature of citizenship and the function of language tests, among others, are dealt with from the point of view of language and language use. Readers are invited to reflect on the type of language competences that need to be acquired as well as an appropriate use of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The collection also sets out approaches and instruments designed to assist in implementing effective policies.

The South Asian population in Canada, encompassing diverse national, ethnic, and religious backgrounds, has in recent years become the largest visible minority in the country. As this community grows, it encounters challenges in settlement, integration, and development. Accounting for only 1 per cent of the population in Quebec, the South Asian community has received limited attention in comparison with other minority groups. The Invisible Community uses recent data from a variety of fields to explore who these immigrants are and what they and their families require to become members of an inclusive society. Experts from Canadian and international universities and governmental and community agencies describe how South Asian immigrants experience life in French-speaking Canada. They look at how members of the community integrate into the job market, how they manage socially and emotionally, how their religious values are affected, and how their children adapt to French-speaking and English-speaking schools. The Invisible Community shares lived experiences of different subgroups of the South Asian population in Quebec in order to better understand wider social, political, and educational contexts of immigration in Canada.

La conférence sur "La diversité linguistique : défi pour les villes et régions européennes" (Rovinj, Croatie, 22-23 mars 2001) a été organisée conjointement par le Congrès des pouvoirs locaux et régionaux de l'Europe (CPLRE), le ministère de l'Intégration européenne de Croatie et le Comité des régions de l'Union européenne. Elle a constitué la contribution majeure du CPLRE à l'Année européenne des langues 2001 et a été l'occasion du lancement de cette année européenne en Croatie. Cette conférence a rassemblé environ 150 participants et a permis à de nombreux experts, mais aussi aux membres du Congrès et aux élus locaux et régionaux présents, d'échanger leurs vues sur l'apprentissage des langues. Cette conférence a permis de présenter des exemples concrets d'apprentissage des langues, qu'il s'agisse des langues de communication internationale, de la langue nationale, régionale ou minoritaire.

This volume brings together two particularly dynamic areas of contemporary research on the French language. The chapters showcase the most innovative current scholarship in historical linguistics, sociolinguistics, and in the burgeoning field of historical sociolinguistics which lies at their intersection. The research across the volume is strongly data-centred, drawing on a wide range of both well-established and more novel theoretical and methodological approaches in order to open up new perspectives on the study of the French language in the twenty-first century. Although it is written in English, the work presented here is underpinned by a range of different approaches from across the Francophone and Anglophone worlds. Particular emphasis is placed on combining quantitative and qualitative approaches, on diversifying tools, methods, and objects of inquiry, and on adopting comparative and multilingual perspectives where these shed new light on important questions relating to French. In these ways, Historical and Sociolinguistic Approaches to French highlights some of the most exciting new directions for linguistic research on the French language.

Il a pour objectif de développer, dans le cadre du concept de plurilinguisme, les bases générales de méthodologie de langue tertiaire en les illustrant d'exemples, sur le modèle de la séquence linguistique "l'allemand après l'anglais ". Les organisateurs du projet, le Centre européen pour les langues vivantes du Conseil de l'Europe et le Goethe Institut Inter Nations, coopèrent à cet égard, en collaboration avec des institutions régionales actives dans le domaine de l'enseignement de langues étrangères.
