This book examines the long, complex experience of American involvement in irregular warfare. It begins with the American Revolution in 1776 and chronicles big and small irregular wars for the next two and a half centuries. What is readily apparent in dirty wars is that failure is painfully tangible while success is often amorphous. Successfully fighting these wars often entails striking a critical balance between military victory and politics. America's status as a democracy only serves to make fighting - and, to a greater degree, winning - these irregular wars even harder. Rather than futilely insisting that Americans should not or cannot fight this kind of irregular war, Russell Crandall argues that we would be better served by considering how we can do so as cleanly and effectively as possible.

The book of Chronicles, the last book of the Hebrew Bible and a central historical book of the Christian Old Testament, has in recent decades gone from being “the Cinderella of biblical studies” to being one of the most researched books of the Bible. The anonymous author, often simply called “the Chronicler” by modern scholars, looks back at the old Israelite monarchy, before the Babylonian Exile, from his vantage point in the post-exilic early Second Temple Period, and attempts to “update” the older historiographies of Samuel and Kings in order to elucidate their meaning to the people of his own time. The Early Professional Interdisciplinary Conference was designed to bring together graduate students, post-docs, and lecturers within the first five years of appointment from any of the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences. Its goals included the facilitation of professional development through interdepartmental idea exchange and collaboration, as well as the application of annual themes to better the understanding of teaching and learning within and between disciplines. This volume brings together approaches from Archaeology, Art History, Assyriology, Cinema, Cultural Anthropology, Egyptology, History, Literary Criticism, Marketing, Medieval Studies, Music, Philosophy, Psychology and Sociology to the theme of “meaning and λόγος.” Topics range from Urartian archaeology, Egyptian religious practice and Roman sculpture to Peppa Pig, brain imaging, heavy metal and the murals of Belfast. Thematic introductions ensure a coherence among and between the various chapters. The word λόγος had many meanings in Ancient Greek: word, opinion, expectation, speech, principle, rhetorical argument, reason, and even meaning. Investigating how the meaning of a word links ideas and affects pedagogical issues began with Herakleitos and continues today. Logos is also the root of the suffix “–logy”, which is used to describe many of the fields in the Humanities and Social Sciences. As such, it provides an appropriate link between the many branches of investigation and scholarship included here.
