A treatise on operative neurosurgery by an officer of the Regular Army would ordi narily be expected to emphasize management of trauma. But this is far from an ordinary effort and the reader will quickly realize that here we encounter a Handbuch in the classic mold. General neurosurgical procedures are presented with great clarity by an extra ordinary individual. Originally an ornithologist of repute and accomplished student of medieval history, Colonel KEMPE received his residency training in the large and well-balanced neuro surgical program at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Later, he was assigned to that service and has been Chief of Neurosurgery at the Center since 1965. Through the years, he has made it a practice to sketch the steps and surgical anatomy of his operative proce dures for inclusion in the hospital records, and these drawings have been used on rounds with young house officers as one of the many notable features of the Army's neurosurgical residency program. His remarkable talent with the sketchbook coupled with his devotion to detail in patient care and in teaching has culminated in an opus which will be of tremendous value. The book is based upon the rich personal experience of the neurosurgeons at Walter Reed. The illustrations and text bring to the student an understanding of anatomy and the important minute details of surgical approaches which are unexcelled in any other presently-available text.

Atlas of Neurosurgical Techniques: Brain presents the current information on how to manage diseases and disorders of the brain. Ideal as a reference for review in preparation for surgery, this atlas features succinct discussion of pathology and etiology that helps the reader gain a firm understanding of the underlying disease and conditions. The authors provide step-by-step descriptions of surgical techniques, clearly delineating the indications and contraindications, the goals, the operative preparation and anesthesia, and postoperative management. Common complications of techniques are also emphasized. Over 900 illustrations aid the rapid comprehension of the surgical procedures described in the text. Highlights: Clear descriptions of the surgical management of aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, occlusive and hemorrhagic vascular diseases, tumors, lesions, pain disorders, trauma, infections, and more Detailed discussion of disease pathology, etiology, and differential diagnosis Concise outlines of indications, contraindications, as well as advantages and disadvantages of each technique illuminate the rationale behind surgical management More than 900 illustrations, including 684 in full-color, demonstrate key concepts Sections on the latest techniques in stereotactic and minimally invasive surgery This companion volume to Atlas of Neurosurgical Techniques: Spine and Peripheral Nerves is an essential reference for all neurosurgeons and residents seeking the current information on state-of-the-art techniques in brain surgery.

This innovative atlas focuses on peripheral nerves and provides a brand new approach compared to regular anatomy books. Using a modern 3D approach, it offers an alternative to conventional anatomical structures. It reviews all the anatomy and the morphology of these structures from an original point of view. In these three-dimensional diagrams, as well as in the watercolor drawings enhanced with a 3D inlay, each type of nerve is depicted in a minute detail. The atlas simplifies the anatomy and make it easy and understandable by allowing readers to develop a mental “real-time 3D GPS”. The integration of MRI sections related to the drawings and the descriptions of the main nerve injuries provide medical students with a flexible but effective transition to the radiological interpretation and furthers the clinical learning process. After a detailed evaluation of the morphofunctional anatomy of the peripheral nerves, the authors present a collection of relevant data on neuromuscular transmission, both from classical and recent literature, ranging from the central and peripheral nervous system to the effector muscle. This information offers a basis for understanding the physiology, the pathology, and the repair prospects of peripheral nerves from a purely theoretical point of view. The book is divided into three main parts: - Fundamental notions: from immunohistochemistry to limb innervation- The upper limb: the brachial plexus and related peripheral nerves- The lower limb: the lumbosacral plexus and related peripheral nerves This atlas also features 261 outstanding full-colour 2D and 3D illustrations. Each picture has been designed in 2D and 3D with a combination of the original editor’s personal drawings/paintings and 3D-modeling tools. This book is a valuable resource for anyone studying medicine, anaesthesiology, neurosurgery, spine surgery, pain, radiology or rheumatology and is also of high interest to the whole medical community in general.

Technological progress in neurosurgery - preoperative investigation of the exact anatomy of the patient, detailed planning of the procedure, and use of endoscopes and videosurgery – have made approaches for intracranial microsurgical procedures smaller compared to historically standard neurosurgical approaches. Building on the previous works "Endoscopic Anatomy for Neurosurgery" and "Keyhole Concept in Neurosurgery," this book offers a systematic overview of keyhole approaches in the daily work of a neurosurgeon. The approaches, strategies, indications and technical details described here are complemented by anatomical pictures, schemes, and artists’ illustrations, and analyzed with regard to geometric boundaries and the topography of the target structures.
