The 2013 Journal of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd focuses on the gift of time, inviting us to slow the pace of prayer and experience God’s time. In addition to catechists’ reflections on the nature of time, the Journal contains art and prayers from the children.

A compilation of the annual Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Journal with indexes for easy reference. The annual Journal includes art and prayers from children in the atria and reflections by catechists on developments and themes relevant to the work. The overarching theme of this compilation, which spans the years 2019–2023, is the Montessori foundations of CGS. Each year, the United States Association of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd produces a journal for members and catechists, a publication that focuses on the religious life of the child and the essentials of the Christian faith. The Journal’s mission is to provide those concerned with children’s theological education a reflective resource for ongoing formation with serious scholarship to support their work with children. In continuing to learn what the child has to teach adults about God, the Journal chooses themes centered on children’s innate spirituality and religious development as described in the work of Maria Montessori, Sofia Cavalletti, and Gianna Gobbi. The theological artwork, prayers, and observations of children in the atrium are vital. Of particular interest are works of the child that show the synthesis of themes presented in the atrium.

The Journal of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) is the annual publication of the United States Association of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, in cooperation with the International Council of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. Those concerned with children’s theological education will find the Journal a reflective resource for ongoing formation to support their work with children. The features demonstrate an understanding of the child, particularly from the point of view of his or her religious potential. This focus on the religious life of the child is the distinguishing feature of the Journal. Each year, themes are chosen centered on children’s innate spirituality and religious development as described in the work of Dr. Maria Montessori, Sofia Cavalletti, and Gianna Gobbi. The theological artwork, prayers, and observations of children in the atrium are vital. Of particular interest are works of the child that show the synthesis of themes presented in the atrium. The 2024 Journal celebrates the history of CGSUSA and features contributions from members on four decades of the catechesis in the United States.

Since Sofia Cavalletti and Gianna Gobbi founded the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) in Rome seventy years ago, they approached children’s catechesis with a focus on Scripture and liturgy, and solidly based their approach on the Montessori principles of education. CGS is a gift and legacy that Sofia and Gianna have bestowed on generations of adults and children around the world who have fallen in love with Jesus, the Good Shepherd. In recognition of seventy years of CGS and of forty years as a national association, CGSUSA has compiled the commemorative journal The Gift of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. The heart of this journal comprises a collection of previously unpublished excerpts from Sofia’s personal correspondence with translator Patricia Coulter, covering various reflections on life and on the nature of the Good Shepherd Catechesis itself. Also included are Coulter’s observations of Gianna's work with children in Rome. CGS members and catechists will appreciate Sofia and Gianna’s long and deep experience of living the Catechesis joyfully and fruitfully with adults and children alike.
