Introduction to Global Health Promotion addresses a breadth and depth of public health topics that students and emerging professionals in the field must understand as the world's burden of disease changes with non-communicable diseases on the rise in low- and middle-income countries as their middle class populations grow. Now more than ever, we need to provide health advocacy and intervention to prevent, predict, and address emerging global health issues. This new text from the Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE) prepares readers with thorough and thoughtful chapters on global health promotion theories, best practices, and perspectives on the future of the field, from the individual to the global level. The world's biggest health care challenges—including HIV, malaria, heart disease, smoking, and violence, among others—are explored in detail in Introduction to Global Health Promotion. The state of the science, including the latest empirical data, is distilled into 19 chapters that update readers on the complex issues surrounding a variety of illnesses and conditions, and disease epidemics and individual, social, institutional, and governmental barriers to preventing them. Expert authors bring to the fore human rights issues, new uses of technology, and practical application of theory. These perspectives, along with the book's multidisciplinary approach, serve to create a well-rounded understanding of global health today. The Institute of Medicine study Crossing the Quality Chasm (2001) recommended that an interdisciplinary summit be held to further reform of health professions education in order to enhance quality and patient safety. Health Professions Education: A Bridge to Quality is the follow up to that summit, held in June 2002, where 150 participants across disciplines and occupations developed ideas about how to integrate a core set of competencies into health professions education. These core competencies include patient-centered care, interdisciplinary teams, evidence-based practice, quality improvement, and informatics. This book recommends a mix of approaches to health education improvement, including those related to oversight processes, the training environment, research, public reporting, and leadership. Educators, administrators, and health professionals can use this book to help achieve an approach to education that better prepares clinicians to meet both the needs of patients and the requirements of a changing health care system.

Ethics in Health Education Edited by Spyros Doxiadis President, Foundation for Research in Childhood, Athens The field of health education is growing in importance as it becomes increasingly clear that many of our most serious health problems are linked with lifestyle and behaviour. Health education is, however, only one factor among many which influence attitudes towards health, and there are numerous different concepts and models of health and disease. Government policies on environmental, economic and social issues, as well as the powerful images created by the mass media, make a strong impression on the public which can often be at odds with the messages given out by the health care professions. The methods used to educate people to lead healthier lives, and the means by which they learn, form the subject of this unique, multidisciplinary volume. Against a wide range of different backgrounds and locations, an international group of experts discuss the main areas of concern with the aim of stimulating increased interest and research activity amongst those working in the fields of health education, medical ethics, community medicine, philosophy, sociology and politics.
