Excerpt from John Ruskin, Vol. 3: Economist Mr. Ruskin has so often spoken other than smooth things. One aim, however, is clearly avowed - an aim characteristic of all the essays of the present series that of attempting to substitute the scientific for the literary method of criticism. The ordinary journalistic method of criticising a book like Mr. Ruskin's Fors Clavigera, namely, that of quoting only some web of paradox or burst of passion, is at once dishonest to the author and misleading to the reader. The scientific attitudeshould be the precise reverse of this. The student, if genuinely trained at all, soon lays aside the slim text-book which incompletely summarizes the facts of his science from one author's own narrow standpoint, and learns to work his way dispassionately through the vast literature which lies behind it; often wearily wading through shallow seas of verbiage, or toiling patiently through deserts of details, useless and numberless as the sand; now silently evading some dismal swamp of error, often crushing a whole stony volume for a few grains of genuine gold. Nuggets indeed there are, but never gold-beds nor Aladdin palaces, and even the traveller's own hard-won treasure will need refining and re-refining by his intellectual heirs. So then if we agree to take up the scientific attitude, if, instead of collecting curiosities of apparent or real error leaving the truth behind, we seek to gather out of these masses of new and strange thought whatever we find, on fair analysis, to be true metal, we are ready to begin gold washing. Originally published in "Cornhill" magazine in 1860, "Unto This Last" is a series of four essays on the politics of economics and capitalism by the prominent English art critic of the Victorian era John Ruskin. While Ruskin was most well-known for his writings on art, he was also an accomplished painter and an influential social philosopher and philanthropist. Considered by Ruskin himself as one of his most important works, the ideas introduced in "Unto This Last" were met with great controversy when they first appeared in "Cornhill" magazine. Ruskin argues that economics, art, and science must all have a fundamental foundation in morality. When morality is applied to capitalism, Ruskin finds this economic system sorely lacking and argues instead that all workers deserve a living wage. He also contends that the modern industrial age has had devastating effects on the natural world that must not been overlooked. "Unto This Last" was profoundly influential on many modern social movements and helped shape the economic and political ideas of Mahatma Gandhi. Ruskin, who cannot be strictly labeled as a liberal or conservative in his political ideology, crafts a thought-provoking exposition of the problems with capitalism and industrialization that is as relevant today as when it was first written. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper.

At the beginning of the twentieth century one of the greatest literary editions of all time was published: Cook and Wedderburn's 'Library Edition' of The Works of John Ruskin (1903-1912). The Library Edition is a major resource for those interested in all aspects of nineteenth-century culture, including literature and economics, art and architecture, science and religion; but today the Library Edition is both expensive and difficult to obtain. Now general access to Ruskin's complete works is made possible through this attractively presented CD-ROM version. Here the reader can navigate rapidly and search accurately through the entire text (which is four times the length of the Bible) and almost 1,000 full-page plates - an incomparable teaching and research resource. This enables you to retrace the kind of movement between texts and images which characterises the associative mind of Ruskin himself - a brilliant polymath.
