Southeastern Europe is characterized by a high degree of ethnical, religious and cultural diversity. Jews, whether Sephardim, Ashkenazim or Romaniots – settling there in different periods – experienced divergent life worlds which engendered rich cultural production. Though recent scholarly and popular interest in this heterogeneous region has grown impressively, Jewish cultural production is still an under-researched area. In this book, Esther Gitman, a Holocaust survivor from Sarajevo, documents the saga of the Jews of Yugoslavia with a focus on Sarajevo, her birthplace. The ground-breaking work reveals the many facets of Jewish life in Yugoslavia from the time of their expulsion from Spain and Portugal in 1492. This book provides an in-depth look at the integral role the Sephardic Jews, from the Hebrew word for Spain, played in the broader development of the city. More broadly, the book provides readers with a glimpse into a community which saw seventy percent of its members annihilated during WWII.

Focusing on an epoch of spectacular demographic, political, economic, and cultural changes for European Jewry, Cultural Intermediaries chronicles the lives and thinking of ten Jewish intellectuals of the Renaissance, nine of them from Italy and one a Portuguese exile who settled in the Ottoman empire after a long sojourn in Italy. This book examines the economics of everyday life and the Final Solution in Southeastern Europe, specifically the role that the mass confiscation of Jewish property and exclusion of Jews as well as other undesired population groups from the national marketplace in Southeastern Europe played in transforming economic life and social relations. It aims to understand how ordinary people in the region responded as beneficiaries, bystanders, perpetrators, rescuers, and, above all, victims to Aryanization, and how regimes and governments adapted its basic principles to their specific national contexts and ideological and ethnic agendas. Aryanization appeared in some of its most radical, accelerated, and yet idiosyncratic forms in Southeastern Europe, representing a staging post or parallel process on the journey to the Final Solution. At the same time, it represented a modernizing project through which states on the periphery of Hitler’s new Europe could not only catch up with the rest of the continent but also seek to gain legitimacy among their own citizens by using systems of mass robbery to satisfy consumer demand and aspirations of social mobility in economies of want and scarcity. This volume is aimed at scholars and students of the Second World War and European fascism, genocide and occupation politics, Jewish studies, and Southeastern Europe.

World War I marks a huge break in Central European Jewish history. Not only had the violent wartime events destroyed Jewish life and especially the living space of Eastern European Jews, but the impacts of war, the geopolitical change and a radicalization of anti-Semitism also led to a crisis of Jewish identity. Furthermore, during the process of national self-discovery and the establishing of new states the societal position of the Jews and their relationship to the state had to be redefined. These partially violent processes, which were always accompanied by anti-Semitism, evoked Jewish and Gentile debates, in which questions about Jewish loyalty to the old and/or new states as well as concepts of Jewish identity under the new political circumstances were negotiated. This volume collects articles dealing with these Jewish and gentile debates about military service and war memory in Central Europe.
