This volume on the works of Eichholtz aims to fill one of the missing links in the growing history of American portrait painting of the early 19th century. At first a coppersmith, the artist became a well-known portrait painter of his day. Although his painting career began & ended in Lancaster, Eichholtz lived for 10 years in Phila., exhibiting regularly at the Penna. Academy of the Fine Arts. He knew Thomas Sully & Gilbert Stuart, but basically he was self-taught. A major portion of these paintings is still in private ownership, but the artist is well represented in museum collections. This volume includes more than 200 illustrations, covering the range of the artist¿s growth & styles of paintings, includes miscellaneous subjects other than portraits.
