A Rave Fable. This play hurls one of Greek tragedy's most compelling sagas into a sleek netherworld of sex, drugs and trance music. Iphigenia is the daughter of a political celebrity who embraces sensuous excess with a transgendered glam rock star named Achilles in a desperate attempt to flee her inevitable fate. "Svich's text is a unique language spoken by beings that inhabit the intermediate world that she creates. It vacillates between poetry and realism, composing a theatrical intercultural dialogue that fuses aspects of modern Latin American slang with US media lingo and original rock lyrics." -Chiori Miyagawa, The Brooklyn Rail "Sacrificial women haunt the darkling world created by Caridad Svich in her bold play. It creates a transfixing vision of hell on earth, buttressed by Svich's fractured poetic voice and her unblinking laser gaze at the ethical costs of cheap labor and disposable celebrity. Svich cunningly twists our expectations of class and gender roles." -Kerry Reid, The Chicago Tribune "Caridad Svich's IPHIGENIA ... A RAVE FABLE is an exhilarating play. The narrative subtlety is what makes Svich's redux of Euripides's IPHIGENIA IN AULIS so stirring. Through video projections, throbbing music and brand-name chemicals may offer escape, they punish the soul. Svich's remarkable poetry and crackling words reveals that the ravers, now permanently numb, also want Iphigenia dead. A play of mythic power." -Mark Blankenship, Variety "Caridad Svich's play has gorgeous, drunken poetry ... This 'rave fable' re-invents the story of Agamemnon's doomed daughter as one of modern political exigency. In the chorus (of dead girls of Ciudad Juarez) Svich layers elegy and comedy, the shame and fear she feels for these lost girls. Svich makes the anonymous city stand in for the gods of ancient drama just as unforgiving, just as hungry, just as brutal." -Helen Shaw, N Y Sun"

The Routledge Companion to Latine Theatre and Performance traces how manifestations of Latine self-determination in contemporary US theatre and performance practices affirm the value of Latine life in a theatrical culture that has a legacy of misrepresentation and erasure. This collection draws on fifty interdisciplinary contributions written by some of the leading Latine theatre and performance scholars and practitioners in the United States to highlight evolving and recurring strategies of world making, activism, and resistance taken by Latine culture makers to gain political agency on and off the stage. The project reveals the continued growth of Latine theatre and performance through chapters covering but not limited to playwriting, casting practices, representation, training, wrestling with anti-Blackness and anti-Indigeneity, theatre for young audiences, community empowerment, and the market forces that govern the US theatre industry. This book enters conversations in performance studies, ethnic studies, American studies, and Latina/e/o/x studies by taking up performance scholar Diana Taylor’s call to consider the ways that “embodied and performed acts generate, record, and transmit knowledge.” This collection is an essential resource for students, scholars, and theatremakers seeking to explore, understand, and advance the huge range and significance of Latine performance.

In its long history of performance and reception, Greek drama has been interpreted and adapted in countless ways and forms in response to and as a reflection of the preoccupations and tensions of particular historical moments. This volume continues this tradition by investigating a cross-section of theatrical productions on the contemporary American stage that have reimagined Greek tragedy in order to address the political and social concerns of minority communities. Studying performance and its role in creating and reflecting social, cultural, and historical identity in contemporary America, it draws on cutting-edge research in the field to move discussion away from the interpretation of dramatic texts in isolation from their performance context, and towards an analysis of the dynamic experience of live theatre. The discussion focuses particularly on the ability of engaged performances to pose critical challenges to the long-standing stereotypes that have contributed to the misrepresentation and marginalization of minority cultures. However, in the process it also uncovers the ways in which such performances can inadvertently reinforce the very stereotypes they aim to execute, demonstrating that ancient drama can be a powerful and dangerous tool in the search for social justice.

Translation and film adaptation of theatre have received little study. This text draws on experiences of theatrical translators and on movie versions of plays from various countries. It looks into such concerns as the translation of bilingual plays and the choice between subtitling and dubbing of film.
