This booklet describes, in a non-technical manner, some important aspects of FAO Technical Guidelines for Responsible Fisheries No. 3 dealing with the integration of fisheries into coastal area management. This booklet does not replace Technical Guidelines No. 3 but simply presents some of the complex information contained in this guideline in a more simplified form so as to make it more accessible.

This report is based on a review of literature and experience relating to the planning and management of aquaculture development and its integration into coastal area management. It explores in detail how more planned and integrated approaches can be applied to aquaculture development. These approaches range from "enhanced sectorial" initiatives, to incorporation within comprehensive ICM programmes.

Close to one-half of all Americans live in coastal counties. The resulting flood of wastewater, stormwater, and pollutants discharged into coastal waters is a major concern.
